Just tell them that you are falling on hard times and that maybe you could work out some sort of payment arrangement. As long as you don't come across as a bill collector, but remain firm that you indeed need the money back, they should get the point. It all depends on the person, sometimes subtle and calm doesn't work. But I am curious to why it has went on this long?

Just bring up the fact that you really need some money and it'd be great if they could pay you back what they owe you. Maybe even say that they can do it in installments if you can afford to wait for part of it. You have a right to ask for it back since it was a loan and you've given them plenty of time to pay it back on their own. They're probably hoping you'll forget, so just bring it up nicely.

Simply tell them the truth that you need the money and as you were kind enough to loan it to them 2 years ago when they needed help you would appreciate them paying it back. If they become angry or upset that is unfortunate but the relationship was ruined when they failed to repay what they owe.

You might as well forget it. When you loan money to family you might as well mark it off the books. Getting that money from you was their top priority, repaying the loan is not even on their priority list. I know. I loaned my half-sister over 3,000 dollars and that was about 11 years ago. Still haven't gotten it back! Hard lesson to learn. Remember it well when the next relative asks.

Does he or she have it to give back? If he or she does then you should calmly ask for the money. sitting down and talking is the best way. They may believe that they have repaided it through other means (i.e. watching a child for no charge, washing your car, driving you somewhere). Many times people miss communicate.
Good Luck

Just be open and honest, not hostile when asking for it back. Maybe you can suggest a payment plan. Explain that you really need the money. I hope everything works out.

You call them up and say hey I need that thou I loaned you 2 years ago. If they dont have at one time which most of us wouldn't --make payment arrangements. If they donot comply take them to small claims court OR worry about making them mad and be out of the THOU you loaned them.

The relationship is already ruined. If they haven't returned the money yet, then it is obvious they don't respect you. You can either get your money or continue to have a good relationship, but it is highly unlikely to have both.
