I too have very long hair and for a long time struggled with it being too dry, too brittle, to unmanagable. Until I did some research in tandem with a hair stylist friend of mine a couple of years ago. The hair not in direct contact with your scalp, i.e. anything below the nape of your neck, only needs to be washed every other week, or if you are in a dirty environment, once a week. If you braid your hair at the nape before you wash it and just wash the hair on your head you will find your hair is healthier than you can imagine in a very short time. I have had several people who have long hair take my advise on this and they all have been amazed at the difference it made within a weeks time. It really doens't matter what type of shampoo you use, although I find Herbal Essence to be best for me. Just rememeber to take it out of the braid and wash the lenght of your hair every week or two. More if you get it dirty, otherwise just a good brushing will work great. The other part of this is never use a brush, always use a large toothed comb. It will really help with breakage and detangling. When you do wash the lenght of the hair, make sure to use a light conditioner or it will be really dry for the next two days.

Healthy hair needs deep conditioning once a week. I great trick I learned from my grandmother is to shampoo hair as usual, then apply mayonaise all over your hair and cover with a shower cap for 30 minutes, then rinse with warm water. It takes care of frizzies and adds lots of shine and volume to hair.

Brush it several times a day. Use only good salon shampoos/conditioners. DO NOT BLOW DRY IT!!! On days that it looks "frizzy" rub some palm oil into the ends OR use sculpting mud. Ask your stylist what products are best for your hair. I recommend Redken Glass for the palm oil and sculpting mud from Crew. If you want to see my hair, please look at my 360 page.

try using leave in conditioners, or products that will give shine to your hair. also, i read somewhere that you should try to wash your hair only every other day.
