First, make sure you have some time to talk but then afterwards will have some time to be apart so it won't be awkward and you can both have time to think about it.

Then tell them:

"Hey, I've been thinking about moving out. It's just not workin out how I thought it would, don't get me wrong you're great it's just I need something new."

Hopefully they will understand and not be angry since you didn't attack them personally and kept it friendly. This will make for a cleaner move-out, and maybe keep the friendship (if there was one) alive too.
It's best to move out one or two days after you talk with him. Any sooner would be insulting since he knows you were planning it and didn't tell him, but any later would be strained.
If all goes well maybe he'll even help you pack
Good luck!

If you are part of the lease then you need to make an effort to replace yourself. Even if you are not, it is the polite thing to do. Every state has their own rules about how long a notice you need to give or how long you will be on the hook to pay rent...you might want to check with you local renters advocacy organization. I would check it all out before I broke it to my room mate so that there is no big arguement right off the bat.

Other than that, having the conversation should be straight forward.

Just don't burn bridges. Give them time to find a new room mate if it will be a financial hardship for them paying rent alone. So give plenty of notice. Be honest and to the point. Have your new place already picked out.

are you saying, "hey, i want to move out" and looking for a constructive solution to problems, or have you already found a place and are planning to leave?

sheesh, this all depends on the relationship you have with your roommate!

Tell the truth. Be prepared to give at least 30 days notice. Try to have a replacement roomie lined up or at least offer to help find one - that might soften the blow.

well...
1) pack up
2) move out

lol jk. sit down and talk to them. tell them why if you can and that you'll stay in touch if you want and then the date you're leaving. or leave a note. which is kinda wimpy, but an option.

why are you worried abou telling them?

politely sit them down and explain your feelings. try to work things out with them first and if that doesnt work just flat out ask them. it will only make it worse if you dance around the subject.
