It is learned behavior. Fathers (by example) teach their sons that they need to know certain things. (car matinence, general household repair, electrical enganeering, etc) Unfortunately their perception of their skill, and their actual skill level do not match.
Men also do not want to appear weak, or unprepared. and in some cases will end up making a fool of themselves trying NOT to do so.
Case in point:
I DO know how to change disk brakes on just about any car, there isn't much to them. However I once tried to replace my rear drum brakes. As soon as I took the drum rotor off I should have stopped, put the wheel back on and gone to a mechanic. I decided I'd be able to do it.
I took the rear brake assembly apart on one side and removed the drum rotor on the opposite side so I had a reference. I got the old shoes off, and was trying to put the brake assembly back together and got stuck.
There I was with my car halfway apart and had no freaking clue what I was doing anymore. I ended up calling a friend to help. It took us 3 hours, but we got that one back together and replaced the other side as well.
I vowed never to mess with drum brakes again, and to this day havn't.
It is normal for men to do thigs over their comprehension level. That's just what they saw their dad do as a child. That is what being a man means to them. (They just don't realize it at the time)

Yea they are. Women like to talk out their problems, but don't necessarily want a solution. They want someone to hear them and just listen. Guys think it's their job to fix it so they tell you what to do. It goes with fixing things around the house too or having answers to everything. Regardless of the man's answers, the woman is always right! A man who wants a good relationship will know this too! lol

There are some men out there that can look at any problem and figure out how to fix it even without knowing how to in the first place, but its rare. Most men want women to believe they can because it is a very desirable trait in a boyfriend/husband. Its totally normal and if you can show him his manhood is not at stake you might get him to calm down (at least without his guy friends around).

You shouldn't be so hard on him for that. Men want to be Supermen for women. If we like you we want you to come to us with problems that we can fix that way we feel useful and it's our way of knowing you need us. It is somewhat primitive but of all the faults your man could have wanting to do things for you isn't so bad.

Yes, they think that a roll of duct tape and a pocket knife makes them mechanical engineers. Haven't you ever watched the Red Green Show?
