candle light or low light.
dark is nice but i like seeing the girls reaction. the candle light or dimmed lights usually give the girl a more romantic setting... or so they tell me, and the shadow play can be kinda cool too :D.

i prefer the lights to be dim or low but you know they say the red lighting adds to the mood...

I prefer them off but I think that men like them on cause they are very visual people. I can deal with them on but I like them very low. No need for a spotlight LOL
