The easiest way to tame her is to simply not tell her anything about what is going on. When she persists with her opinions, be polite, smile and say, "Hmmm, that's definitely something we'll consider". Then do whatever you really want to do. You are not obligated to take her advice, she just wants to give it. So, acknowledge politely and then make your own decisions. Do not report back to her with everything you and your husband are doing or every decision you make. In time she will realize that you two can handle things on your own just fine. She will also respect you more if you treat her in a civil manner and acknowledge her opinions and life experience. It's not saying that she's right, just that you respect the fact that she has her own opinions. I finally started saying things such as "you know, that's the beauty of life, we all go through it and all have to sometimes make our own mistakes." It has taken a long time but she has eventually stopped butting in and trying to control. We also moved to another city which helped immensely.

Just be polite and suck it up. That means, when she says, "I never make pie that way," you say, "Really? That's why yours is always so nice! Well, this is how my mom taught me, and old habits die hard. Can I get you a glass of wine?" And then pour yourself one, too.
If it's "I think Jenny needs a coat on out there," say, "Well, I do, too, but she just won't wear it and she hasn't gotten sick yet. If she does, that'll teach her, eh? Now how about that glass of wine?"
Your husband needs to be aware of the extent of the problems between you and your mother in law, and he needs to know that it's his job to keep things under control. That means that maybe instead of leaving you and Mom alone, he needs to engage with her when she's at the house, and keep her out of your way.

That's the impossible, 13 years running here and haven't been able to do it yet. Good Luck! Patience, patience, patience and the occasional Xanax.

If she's your mother-in-law, then you have a husband. If you have a husband, she's his mother. Tell your husband to deal with the problem. It shouldn't be your problem to deal with.

Just tell her that it isn't any of her business. Stand your ground and don't EVER back down.
