My dog felt hot around his ears and on his back when I left for work this morning. Can this indicate a fever? He was acting sleepy, which is not abnormal. I don't have a rectal thermometer, but will run out and get one if necessary...

Your dog is not going to die...that's ridiculous! If he has a fever, he will be lethargic & not eating. He will act like nothing interests him. If you need to know, go get a rectal thermometer & take his temp your self. Sometimes, when a dog has been laying in one position for a long time, it's body will be warm. Much like us when we lay in one place for too long, those parts of the body that we had been lying on, will be warm. When you get home from work, check him out & be sure he's okay. Is he hungry? Is he excited as usual to see you? Does he want to play? If he is acting as usual, he's probably okay.

you can check with one of those ear thermometers as well as a rectal. Feel, ears, stomach, pads of the feet, nose (should be cold and wet) if they all feel hot than, your dog has a fever. If the fever is the only symptom just keep a close eye on your dog. Plenty of water, fever in dogs just like in humans means their immune system is fighting. It is just a matter of what your dogs immune system is fighting against. More symptoms will make the next course of treatment easier.

Dear friend ,
The most common sign that a dog has a fever is if the nose is warm and dry and the inside of the ears are warm and the best thing to give them for it is go get you some baby asprin and put it in some ham or some wet dog food and you will get your dog to eat it and then in a couple of days the dog shuold be better in a couple of days ........

if his nose is dry and warm take his temp with a rectal thermometer. Normal temp for a dog is 99-101 degrees. Any hotter call a vet. Give him ASPIRIN only, NEVER TYLENOL
(opposite for cats)

Actually a dogs normal temp is between 101 and 102... it should not dip below 100!!! And NEVER>>>NEVER give a dog aspirin! unless directed by your vet... Aspirin can cause Liver and Kidney problems....where did you get your info from??? A dog will naturally feel hotter to us because their body temp is more. If you feel like he's got a temp you can give him a cool (not cold) bath to slowly bring down his temp.

a dogs temp should be roughly 101 degrees. If it's over 102.5 degrees he has a fever.
