I can purchase XP with a student discount. It currently works, but has trouble with the USB Wireless network adaptor, it seems to only see it sporadically.

I'd upgrade. There's more functionality with XP, as well as more stability. And since you get a student discount, use it.

There's a lot of businesses still using Win 2000. It's probably the most stable OS Microsoft ever made. I would not waste my money on XP. The very slight advantage that XP "might" give you just isn't worth the expense. Take the money you'd spend on XP and upgrade your RAM.

Windows 2000 is a perfectly good operating system, so unless you need a feature that is only supported in XP, why bother. The wireless adapter issue is more likely to be because the machine is USB1 and not USB2.

No. I used win 2000 where I used to work, and it is much more stable than XP. I have XP on another computer here. I use Win 98 SE and will until it won't work anymore.

If it works, why not wait for Vista? My husband has the beta of Vista, and he really likes it.
