Do you realize that all Christians aren't trying to convert you to thier beliefs?

Do you realize that Christians aren't all morons blindly following religion?

Did you know that in every group of people whether it be religious or non religious is made up of all kinds of people, evil, good, intellighent and ignorant?

Can't we all just agree to respect what we believer or don't believe?

I for one grew up non religious. My choice to become Catholic took many years of study and soul searching to come to my decision. In the end I knew it was the correct choice and what God wanted for me.

Yes, I understand all of these things. But it is the nature of people to find it confusing that other people disagree with them after having thought about the issues. Many religious folk can't understand why anyone would be an atheist and many atheists don't understand how anyone who has considered the issues could be religious. Both sides seem to think the other is missing something crucial.

With that said, there are many believers that *are* trying to convert others. They do so because their religion says they should or because they feel that they have a way to 'salvation' and want others to share in their joy. There are also many morons on both sides who either follow their religion blindly or are atheists for the rebellion aspect of it. very few on either side think deeply about their beliefs.

My problem begins when the believers say that we have to teach their doctrines in school or avoid scientific or historical findings that contradict their beliefs. I have problems when they make it difficult for people to get birth control, or study stem cells, or love they people they find to love. believers have a long history of trying to control the minds and bodies of others. That is why I have problems with many of them.

Atheism and non believers means the same thing.
And it's not all Christians trying to convert. Some, is more than enough.
Some morons are Christians too. Some morons and Christians are blind.
Unfortunately, regardless of religious belief, usually there are evil, intelligent or ignorant people in all groups as well. They're just hard to recognize. Especially the intelligent, evil ones.
And, deplorable as it is, at least to date, it appears that the answer to our all agreeing to anything, any one thing, is no, we cannot.
And last, but not least, is your having made a choice, freely, after years of study, was just that, your choice. Try your very best to remember it was your choice.
Not a choice someone else made for you.
I have to say I see a great deal of religious groups doing their best to control all we do, read, watch, say, decide and live.
They have gone as far as to unfairly supporting political figures agreeing to their,... beliefs ? /demands?.
Your finding anything that you actually want and choose to do, that helps you get thru your life without hurting anyone and even possibly helping has got to be a good thing. Good Luck

I'm usually the first one to jump into all those threads that you described and just raise hell (no pun intended), but I must say, this is the most intelligent one I've ever seen (probably will ever see in my lifetime...). I think it is because you said that you "grew up non religious" gives you a perspective that other catholics don't have. I never thought that ALL christians are trying to convert me, or are morons, and I do realize that there are at least one bad apple in every bunch.

However, one question will not change my views on religion. Any of them. But my hat does go off to you, sir, for taking the time to try to find some neutral ground.

Sure. I know plenty of Christians who do not try to convert me, who honestly live according to their beliefs. I also know some who blindly do and say whatever their priests tell them to, without question. I grew up Catholic, and after reading many books other than the Bible, and witnessing the behavior of the religious folk around me, I decided I had no faith that I was being taught any kind of truth at all. Now I call myself pagan, for I believe that there is some truth in all religions, in all gods of any names.

It's called the "great commission" and the (true) Christian faith advocates that we go out to all the world and preach the good news.

Any individual believer should be ready to answer the question "why do you believe". Both in-season and out-of-season, to anybody that asks.

***
so, when you are kind of bragging that...

Do you realize that all Christians aren't trying to convert you to thier beliefs?

It's really kind of a blemish on Christianity that all christians are not promoting the "good news" in any degree of small measure or large measure.

And besides, I, as a Christian, can only really respect another religion, - in-as-much it aligns with the Truth. How can anybody give 'respect' to errors or falsehoods??

The very first sentence in your post shows that you have a profound lack of knowledge of your own beliefs. Christians are told by GOD HIMSELF to spread the word. If you're not trying to convert people, then you're not acting in the way that God wants. Your wish for an agreement to "respect what each of us believes or doesn't believe" is inherently ANTI-Christian. To play Rodney King with a cross around your neck is hypocritical. Read your bible and know that I am right.

Frankly, you didn't spend ENOUGH time studying or soul-searching if your decision landed you in church. In fact, you took the path of least resistance.

Wimp.

One thing to udnerstand here. When you saying that there are all kidns of Crtistians in Cristianity you forget that Cristianity portraits Muslims as terrorists bases on some Islamic groups. Its applicable to every religion or no religion.
BUt those little or small groups of radicals are ,uch mroe noticable than others.
When you saying i am Cristian and i don't try to ruin any1 live you confusing that we know Cristianity not for you but from Those radicals who scream harder than any1 else.

"Do you realize that Christians aren't all morons blindly following religion?
" No i don't realise that since i can bet my money that msot cristians never read the bible them self. They get the msg from Churches or other educated Ppl . Just simplt ask what are the 10 commandments will get many cristains into thinking and asking who discover Jesus empty tomb will get all kinds of answers even from those who thiknks they read the bible.
THere are some educated Cristanity but those are usualy who teaches others and they do have agenda.
And according to your own Religion you must convert others either peacefully or by force but its strait in the BIble. ( let me know if you need excat verses where it says)
As for Catolics just to notice that they lovely BIble is King James and Catolics originaly were against King James. Vatican proclaim him as enemy I think Before Catolics jumping into King James bible at least they should take some time and read who was King James and why Vatican was against him.
I don't belive in any religion. GOD does not need religion. Religion Needs GOD.

ANd i wander how many Cristians and including your self have read any other Religios book to know The BIble is teh true one.

Therefore GOD and

Christians tout the phrase "spread the word". Don't Christians go out to the far reaches of the world on "Missions" to spread the word. What part of not trying to convert other people does that not cover?

I personally would love to see school teachers sent out on "Missions" to educate the people of the world that God is an fictitious character. Maybe there would be less people in this world that won't strap a bomb to their body and run into a large crowd in the name of their God.

If only life were this easy. It would be nice if we could all live and let live, but too many people are so insecure in their beliefs that they must try to convert everyone else - be it religion, politics, or whatever else comes into their tiny little minds.

I believe what I believe, and I am able to defend it with logic and reasoning. Liberals and non-religious type people believe in their feelings, so they can't defend their opinion and get very defensive.

I know a woman who totally converted her, then, boyfriend who was an ardent and scientifically knowledgeable atheist to the point where he, now, is a totally committed, converted, Roman Catholic who goes to Church at least once a week, reads the Bible every day, and is totally involved with the Catholic community.
Long story short (and, believe me, it's a very long story), he was willing to do what she asked of him and it all started with daily prayers, with him participating, that "God will come to you", etc. Then she engaged him in Bible reading where they'd discuss what they read. At the same time he had to go to Church every time she did (you should see him now, goes with her AND without her!). After a little over a year of this she actually hired a religiously fanatical hypnotist and after many sessions extending over a few months (for free!) that clinched it, he began seeing and hearing God, etc. Finally, he enrolled in those RCIA classes and was baptized a Catholic. They, then, married...in a Roman Catholic church.
He doesn't even bother with science now except as a way to re-convince him of his faith. It was totally amazing to me and his other friends who he now tries to convert also! At least they are the happiest couple I know. :)
