It depends on the dead person. Is it someone you know? if it is, its most likely that that person wants to communicate with you, which is thru your dreams, to tell you something. I had a dream about my friend's mom. His mom died of and anurism (blood vessels that burst in the brain, sudden death.) i was extremly close to her. She never had any daughters, but i was like a daughter to her. There were somethings that i wanted to tell her, but she had already passed away. One day i thinking about her and when i fell asleep, i dreamt that i was talking to her. She wanted me to know that she will always love me and she told me to let her sons know that she will love them always, and will always be there for them, even if she is gone. I asked her before she left, "are you alright?" and she replied, "its cool. Im in a safe place." then she walked out and i never "heard" from her again.
Remember that it depends on the person that is deceseced, and how you feel. Spirits go by karma or the personality of a certain person.

Someone you know? If it is someone you know my feelings are they are communicating with you. They are just letting you know they are there with you and don't want you to forget them.
