The good: Norton AntiVirus 2006 offers improved detection and removal of spyware and adware.
The bad: New Norton Protection Center introduces more clutter than useful features; Norton AntiVirus 2006 waits until spyware installs before catching and removing it.
The bottom line: Norton AntiVirus 2006 improves its detection and removal of spyware and adware but lags behind the more proactive McAfee VirusScan 2006.
The good: McAfee VirusScan 2006 provides aggressive scanning to catch spyware before it installs; improved subscription model entitles you to feature upgrades through the life of your subscription.
The bad: McAfee VirusScan 2006's user interface overemphasizes the company's other products; provides relatively slow full system scans.
The bottom line: With VirusScan 2006, McAfee greatly enhances user protection against spyware and adware threats but slows your system down in the process.
Personally, I prefer: Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security.
The good: Speedy scanning; includes a full-fledged firewall as well as spyware- and spam-blocking tools; free phone support.
The bad: No automated scan after installation.
The bottom line: PC-cillin Internet Security 2005 delivers speedy virus scanning and a host of other Internet protection tools--all for the price of most antivirus-only programs alone.

The differnece comes as to whether you have a Windows 2000 network or are using Windows XP at home. For WinXP on a single computer, Norton has the best suite of programs. For a Win2000 or a WinXP network, McAfee has the best suite of programs. They both offer the same protection, in fact so much the same protection you would swear they are the same program only different names.
Now if price is the issue, then for you money, Norton is the best buy. It's subscription renewal is slightly cheaper than McAfee However most Compaq and HP computers come today with Norton Internet Security, and a 60 day trial on it, already installed so you have no cost to buy,

I'm a Computer Network Tech.
Out of those two go with Norton. It's much easier to use and makes much more sense than MacAfee.
Also, don't bother with Norton (Symantec) System Works, Internet Security, Firewall, etc. Just get straight out regular antivirus (it comes with some internet security built in). Then once it's installed tweak it to run how you'd like. I turn off the annoying taskbar alerts in 2006.

I completely disagree that Norton is the best program. I have had both and most new computers come with Norton pre-installed with a 90 day trial. When I had Norton my computer contracted a virus that it was unable to recover from. Plus.. if you have aol as your internet service, AOL does not support any problems associated with this form of virus protection because they believe it to be inferior.
After that experience, It was suggested to me to download AVG anti virus (Free). A friend of mine who is computer tech support rep said it was an excellent program. It served me well and I never had a virus while using it.
McAfee is however the best on the market. It automatically updates your system based on new evidence and virus reports. Combined with McAfee firewall... this is the way to go for all around computer protection. (AOL offer both "free" as part of their broadband package plans).

Mcafee is more user friendly but Norton offers way more protection IN THEORY. The problem is that is can become so unwieldy you may be tempted to turn off features which defeats the purpose. If you are tech savvy get Norton. If you like ease of use "do my thinking for me" kind of software, go for McCafee

I find that McAfee is easier to use. I used to use Norton, but after awhile, it made my computer run slower b/c of what it does in the background. It's a personal preference though, just as long as you have a virus protector.
From stuff I read off of geeks2go.com, alot of people get their desktops hijacked using norton. I could be wrong though.

I personally would say Norton. I have used both, and I find that McAffee is a memory hog and slows down your system. I also find that Norton has more frequent virus signature updates, which makes it more readily capable of catching an infection.
However, whichever one you choose, be very dilligent about also using occasional online scans. More and more virii are being coded to attack and neutralize antivirus software, making your program say you are clean despite having many infections ... a friend of mine had that happen with AVG--it said he was clean but had over 1500 infections.

I use Antivir - the free edition. Works great. Pros: A better scan engine, takes a lot less mem and cpu time in comparison with both norton and mcafee.

Everyone I know says Norton is the best. Mcafee doesn't work like it's supposed to.
