Yes, there is such a thing.
Find a beautiful poem. Use a pretty font and print it on parchment paper or some other decorative writing paper which will go through the printer. Mat and frame it.
It is a wonderful gift that is thoughtful and elegant.

Remember that you have a year to give a wedding gift. I have sometimes been short on funds, and waited until I was in better financial shape to purchase a gift. If you feel that you must bring your gift to the reception I have on occasion given a bottle of champagne (or bubble bath) and a scented candle, wrapped together with a suggestive note. Registry items can be helpful as well. Sometimes there are salt & pepper shakers or small appliances that are affordable.

Of course, if that's what you can afford, and if the gift shows your friendship and caring.
Try taking pictures at the wedding and arranging them in an album or scrapbook. Or give a set of those silver frames--those aren't very expensive, but they look it. Fooled me at my wedding.
If the couple already have kids, which isn't unheard of, offer to babysit.
If you've known them a long time, put together a scrapbook or journal about each of them and their relationship. You could ask friends and family to contribute memories and put together something that would put all the $200 gifts to shame, in a big way.
Money isn't what's important about a gift.

I would think yes, so long as it was on the registry. Many couples try to register at places like Wal Mart and Target for cheaper items, mainly for the older guests who are on a very limited budget. So, you could pick up a few items in one of the cheaper stores, and give those as a gift.
Even a gift card to a particular store should be helpful as well, just in case the couple forgot to put something on the registry!!

I like to give silverware as gifts. For $20 you can buy a set of silver-plated serving utensils like a large spoon, serving knife, serving fork set type of thing. A nice set of candlesticks or a pair of flower vases or serving bowls are also good gifts. Try not to buy junk, however.
You could also consider a couple of nice music CD's or perhaps an IPod accessory.
Include the gift receipt from where you purchased the items, so if the wedding couple would prefer to trade the gifts for something else, they can.

I've gotten really nice food storage sets for under $20. Get the white ceramic ones with lids. Comes in a big box and is heavy so it looks like you're spending a lot!

Best 'cheap' gift we were given was a fire blanket for the kitchen. It was intriguing getting a gift tag that read "we hope you never use this gift!"
Sadly 8 years later we did have to use it. It saved our kitchen and possibly our home and our lives.

yes. a gift means so much more if you're familiar with a person's likes and you pick out a gift you know for sure they would like.
