I have a three year old indoor dog and we have some bad allergies to him in our family. We have been discussing moving him outdoors to live. He is used to being outside during the day when we are at work, but I am not sure if he will be happy outside all the time, when he is used to indoor life with the family. Will he feel lonely? I plan to set him up with a dog box right outside the back door, so he can still see us inside. I will still spend time with him, but he will not be around us all the time like he is now. Would he be better off in an indoor home with people who can give him the attention he needs, or will this work out keeping him outside?

Yes u can convert ur dog to life outside but need i warn u dogs that live outside tend to get fleas, ticks, heart worm, ring worm, and plenty of other diseases and things like that. So u have to make sure ur dog is ready for that. Remember to give him plenty of water, and always give him fresh water and clean his water and food bowl every week (if ur planning to keep the bowls outside as well.) Give him shelter thats maybe under a tree or something like that. No ur dog wont feel lonely, as long as he's happy and playing around he'll be fine. But he will need extra attention and plenty of bathing here and there. If u have toys for him leave those outside for him too, u also wash the toys too. If u dont have toys i suggest u buy some. 3 year old dogs are still puppies and very playful still. GOOD LUCK!! I HOPE EVERYTHING GOES WELL!!! email me if u have any questions

Our dog is a part of our family and an inside dog. I couldn't even imagine putting him outside all the time and expect him to feel loved. I would not keep him outside all the time, especially since he is used to being inside. He thinks he is a person and will feel lonely and like he has done somthing wrong if you start keeping him outside all the time. Also putting the dog house so close to the door would be like rubbing it in his face. He can see you guys but can't be near you. I would suggest giving him to another loving home or the people in your family who are allergic, taking some medications.

You obviously love your dog, but your family comes first. Try him outside for awhile I really don't think that this will work though, Dogs that have been raised indoors and now have to be put outside will be lonely and depressed. look for signs on shedding more that normal (patches of fur, bald spots) this is a sign that something is very wrong. If all else fails try to find your dog a good loving home, with a family who can give him what you can't, a place to sleep inside.

Dogs are alot like people and they do have a need to belong to the family 'pack'.
This change will possibly cause stress, confusion and depression for your dog, since it was raised as part of the family.
My suggestion is to make the outdoor environment as dog friendly as possible, and spend extra amounts of time making your dog happy!

If he is use to living inside with the family he will not understand being put outside. It will seem like prison to him. They have feelings just like humans. Put yourself in your dogs place and answer the question.

dogs are social creatures and he will be very unhappy if left outside unless you provide interaction with the family on a very regular basis, scheduled predictable play times and walks should do it nicely, but they must be predictable. dogs love routine and get nevous when life is unstructured.
