I've wonder the same, I mean, he's supposedly omnipresent, omnipotent and omniscient, couldn't he just make a trick that convinces everyone? He created the entire universe and can't convince everyone about what he wants or even if he exists? He either doesn't give a damn or he ain't that great.
Turning into a human and saying you are god wouldn't convince anyone, specially if you bleed and die like everyone else. And it gets more suspicious when a lot of people from where you lived didn't turn into christians and most conversions took place in places where you never were. Suspicious, huh? Seems like a lot of people in Jerusalem didn't believe in the so called "miracles" that took place around them. Why would that be?
I suspect that, if there is a god, he either can't do it (so he ain't omnipotent) or he doesn't know how to do it (so he ain't omniscient). Shouldn't an omnipotent being able to convince everyone if he(she) really wanted? If he(she) can't, is he(she) omnipotent at all?
But I think the true answer is what you already said, it's an invention by people.

Dear Jim,
There is so much evidence of God in world. In fact the world is screaming out, "Praise be to the Lord1" The problem is that man, in general, is spiritually dead. Mankind is dead in sins and trespasses. And just like a dead corpse that cannot hear, nor see, nor do anything except corrupt so to mankind continues. Jim, why does God say so many times in the Bible, "If any man hath ears to hear, let him hear." Was God just filling up space in the Bible? Absolutely not! He is telling us that we cannot hear hias commands, let alone abey them! Why? Because man is spiritually dead!! Now do you understand why a person must be born again? And just as you had no say in when you were born or what eye or hair color would be, so to you cannot decide when you are going to be born again! The Lord has to do ALL the work. And Jim, you may not be one of God's elect!! That is, God is sovereign and He may not have chosen to save you and so you will live out your life on earth and die and spend eternity in hell. I do not know though. God is not a respecter of persons. As long as there is still breath in your lungs, you can pray and ask the Lord for mercy because He is a merciful God. He has. The devil is real too and he has spent many years deceiving people and tricking them into thinking God is not real. God cannot lie, so whatever he says you can believe; the devil cannot tell the truth, so whatever he says you know the opposite is true. Think about it in the terms of your own question: if God really didn't exist why make such a big deal about it. You know in your own heart he does and that is why you're asking questions. The devil has been lying to you most of your life, and now God is starting to get through, which creates a duality. Search your heart, you'll find the truth.

I think the "want" comes into it somewhere.
Maybe god wants us to have the free will to believe, or not to believe. Be a good person, or a bad person. So hard to explain but for me my faith grew as I learned lessons in my life. All the BS I endured is seen in a different light and I believe the strength that made me ME came from god. It's a feeling, a warmth and there has never been anything that has given me that other than my faith. It's a different feeling to "love", love alone, I mean like the love for my children yet so similar as in unconditional. I never feel alone because of this feeling yet felt more alone when was surrounded by people. God never caused any of the BS yet he helped me to keep strong. I couldn't sit here and tell of any story in the bible that well as not read much of it. I couldn't sing a hymn from church as never been to church. It is purely a feeling from within and what else has happened in my life to make me believe as I do. I have been shown so much to convince me, and felt so much to make me realise you don't have to be dead to live in hell, and you don't have to be buried to be dead. You can die within and I come close many times. Gotta go and only rambling now but I am convinced god is real

Buddha is not a god instead an enlightened being. Different names different people, different gods. How many different types of bananas or monkey's? Diversity is good. And if God wants you he'd get in touch. Not an invention they have\had universal truths you don't subscribe to.

In the Bible, God never gives out a name. He says "I am who am." Perhaps it is not His name that is important, but the existence of His entity.
As to why there are multiple religions in the world (discounting the multiple Christian branches), I believe that is because God has revealed Himself to the people of the world in many different ways. Sometimes He is known through books (Quran, Bible), His presence in all creation (animism -- Hinduism and Native American beliefs), and His presence in mind and spirit (meditative religions -- Buddhism).

God is LOVE. It is beyond conditional words here....
Religions are humanity trying to explain God with conditional words.
Breathing causes spiritual amnesia.
Your body is WHAT you are IN, not WHO you are.
God is HOW you are able to BE you.
God is HOW you are able to recognize your reflection, when actually you cannot see it.
God is HOW you recognize yourself in photos, even when you forget everyone else that you CAN see for yourself.
God is everything AND nothing at all.
Welcome to this temporary conditional reality, where you forget yourself, so you can pretend whatever you choose all over again.
Nothing changes GOD... no matter how many ways humanity tries to explain it here.

He did. After Eve listened to The Serpent in the garden of Eden, they did not get be as close to God as they were. God did not want his people to serve Him like Robots. He wanted us to serve Him for who He is. and what He has done for us that is why He, Jesus was willing to come into the World and sacrifice His life for us, so that we could have free choice, to choose to serve Him in Love.He may not give you a direct E-mail, but He chooses us to be His messengers.

As the Glory of Intelligent Design teaches, it is the will of God that controls the evolution of mankind and all living organisms. With so many life forms to focus His will on, God (the Designer) does not have time to communicate with us.

Almighty God HAS made Himself known to all when He came down from heaven to take on the form of a mere man. Most people either didn't believe He was who He claimed to be or believed and hated Him for it. What more can you ask for?
