Someone was just accused of making up stories about Mithra to discredit Christianity. Why would anyone make stuff up to discredit Christianity? Do Christians think people are out to get them? Is that the problem? I assure you, I only use real stuff to discredit Christianity. There is plenty of it.

Julia in Miami wrote: "I just read an article about Mithra, and it said nothing about wise men, Dec. 25, Mithra dying on a cross, or a Last Supper.

My hunch is that the ancient Persians didn't believe all these things about Mithra -- rather, these things were later added to his story by people such as yourself who are bent on discrediting Christianity."

Julia, if I don't want to follow your rules, I won't. I'm not even Christian, why would I feel compelled to discredit a religion for the rules it DOESN'T impose on me. You need to do some critical thinking from some new perspectives, because I think you have yourself fooled.

I don't hate the Christians, I hate the belief system that promotes ignorance.

I will always point out hypocrisy and make fun of it. If a Christian practices hypocrisy then they should feel picked on.

I have noticed that many people do actually make fun of Christianity/Christ/God/theists. So what? At least they aren't burning them at the stake.

The story of Mithra does pre-date Christ. The popular cult of the time does have undeniable similarities to the Christ story.

I'm sure the judeo-Christian mythological entity Satan planted that story beforehand to fool people later on. It could never be that anything in the bible was taken from other known stories of the time.

>>> Why would anyone make stuff up to discredit Christianity?<<<

Because Christianity teaches things like: don't have sex before marriage. Don't lie. Don't be selfish. Drinking a little is okay, but don't get drunk. Life can be fun, but it's not just a party; it has a purpose.

Some people just can't deal with these teachings. They don't want to hear them.

These teachings don't mesh with their lifestyle, so they feel the need to discredit and defame the source of these teachings. That source, of course, is Christianity.

If something teaches things that don't mesh with our lifestyle, our first reaction (obviously) is to want to debunk and discredit that which holds those teachings.

And what better way to do that than to push the idea that its teachings are false.

It's similar to what defense lawyers do when they try to "get their clients off."

If an eyewitness gives rock-solid and damning testimony against their client, they will do everything they can to discredit, defame, and debunk the witness.

They might even bring up less-than-positive attributes that they think the witness possesses -- not because they really care about these supposed attributes, but because they're trying to discredit the person so that their client walks.

People do the same thing to Christianity all the time, in order to feel better about all the things they do that Christianity frowns upon. The Mithra story is just one way they do that.

yeah, some times I feel picked on. But, most of the stuff that's out there discrediting christianity is false and there is so much scientific truth that proves christianity that it rolls off pretty easy. In the last days though things will get a lot worse for us... If everything I stand for is false, then I'm not out anything...

Christians have trouble because of false Christians. You are a minor matter. If you relied on the real and true Christians for your information.... you would not be able to discredit Christianity.

Sadly, there are so few of them.... they are hard to find.

Yes, I'm out to lie and cheat every Christian on the planet. Muahahahaha...

I felt the same way. I thought that was a rather insulting thing for Julia to say to me. I've always shown her nothing but respect.

I don't think they get picked on for no reason. If anything, people are fed up of the christian rants and their refusals to see past the end of their flippin noses and are now refusing to let them away with it and are taking a stand and standing up for their own individual faiths.
But now of course the bible bashers are feeling hard done by as we are no longer giving them a fool's/idiot's pardon and are crying. boo hoo.
They don't like being proven wrong about their precious bible either.

the bible disproves itself and if we are picking on christianity we have a reason to do so. after 2000 years of bloodshed violence and hatred brought on by the christian churchs and the lies that they have made i think its about damn time that we as non christians fight back and discredit there book of lies and hatred. and i dont like the statement that they are not true christians since thats a copout and every atheist and non christian knows it is. if you really read the damn bible christian's you would know its full of hatred and not love

JuliaInMiami always makes anti-gay comments and spreads disinformation about gays, she says gays spread disease and don't tend to live past 40...sure, these are pretty nasty comments quoting highly dubious statistics, my partner is a professor in statistics and I can spot biassed statistics when I see them quoted.
JuliaInMiami works full-time for her Catholic church as a facilitator and organisr so she obviously has a vested career interest to protect..I think that's enough said about her to explain her motives.

If other people think my values have to be just like theirs, then they are missing out on a lot of interesting diversity in the world.

Most unfortunately, on this site, every religion and belief (even non-belief) is picked on every day. This should not be - if people don't like a certain way of thinking - they shouldn't answer.
