I have a roommate that is always loud. he can't help it. aside from his music always being loud he can't even talk quietly. he tries to whisper and it's like a normal voice. I would swap him out or something but I don't have a choice. I'm in the army and i'm stuck with his loud, obnoxious, strong diaphram having self. what can I do?

Look at the bright side, you aren't married to him... so it won't last forever.

There is a lot to be said for ear plugs! They will ease the physical pain of the loud music.

There are several reasons he may be like this. If he was raised in a loud environment, it's his norm. He could be totally unaware of how rude this is, OR he could just be the south end of a north bound horse.

There are a few tricks of the trade that may work, without ruffling his feather.

When speaking to him lower/soften your voice. If you elevate yours to his level it may only escalate.

Speak to him in a normal voice when the music is cranked up. If he can't hear you, don't raise your voice, but polity indicate for him to turn down the music, or do it yourself.

Politely tell him the volume of the music is hurting your ears, would he mind keeping it at a lower volume when you are around.

Wear the earplugs. Don't make an issue of it, but don't hide it either. You may just shame him into being polite.

Roommates are like mini marriages, they are a take and give situations.

Hang in there it won't last forever.

o.k.
the music thing and even tv....buy head phones for each other! that way your tv and music won't bother him and vice versa.
i know lots of military guys that do that (i'm a marine wife, so i understand barracks life).

as for him just being loud in general...well, maybe when the music is resolved the other things won't bother you as much.
or, if it's a situation like, you're trying to read and he's being loud on the phone...you could read somewhere else, or ask him to please keep it down since you're reading.

barracks are tricky b/c it's such close quarters.

you could always ask for a room reassignment....but you could end up with someone worse....your choice!

take care.
