(without Googling it), I believe it had something to do with the war between England and France eons ago. England would cut off the middle finger of captured French soldiers because it's the finger they used to ready the bow and arrow. As an act of defiance, French soldiers during battle would hold up their middle finger to show the English that they still had them.

I could have the countries wrong here, but that's pretty much it.

Actually, this originated in the midieval era. When someone was captured by an enemy, they would recieve as punishment, the cutting off of their middle finger. This was so they could not shoot any arrows, and would no longer be a danger to the kingdom. So if someone escaped, once he was out of arrow rance, say, on a hill in sight of the castle, he would wave his middle finger back to them, as if to say, I still got my finger.

Hope this helps!

This is the answer to a different question, but if you want to make a (model) gingerbread house for the holidays, I have seen people make them. It takes a lot of work to put them together and frost them, but they are fun to eat the next day. Unfortunately I am no longer in touch with the person who made them. You might be able to find a recipe and instructions on line.

It is simply a finger I don't see what all the fuss is about. I think it might have come into play tho, when somebody got mad at someone and used it as a hate sign.
