Assessing a system, process or lifestyle to see if future generations will have the opportunity to make the same choices for health, home & livelyhood.

eg will there be any timber left for building, or sufficient water suitable for growing crops if the land-race genes have been lost? will they be able to commute 60miles a day.

evaluating and area for its ability to sustain a population for a given period of time....
The evaluator (researcher) will decide the area (land, ocean, pond, etc.) the population (human, plant, animal) and the time (hours, days, months, years, etc.)
With this information the researcher can determine how long the population can be sustained in the given area in the given time if the following life sustaining items are available. Predictions can be made. Worst and best cast scenarios can be set up. That's why we ask, "What will we do when the Earth can no longer sustain us?"
