You can it is called line breeding.
It is done in show dogs to accuentuate certain traits or charastics.
Is it a good thing to do and healthy NO it is not.
It brings out more of the genetic problems like hip displaysia, cardio myothopy, Von WIlldebrands, and many other things.
It can also have effects on the mental health of the dog. They can be more aggressive or just not a smart as one with better breeding.
You need to breed not only for looks but workability and intelligence in the dog as well as good looks.

Yes, it's called "line breeding".

This is the sort of thing breeders do when they are looking for show dogs. I think they try to avoid mother/son and brother/sister but just about anything else is fair game. Unfortunately, while it may accentuate the positive, it also accentuates the negative. My neighbor has a dog with an unbelievable pedigree. The dog looks great, but he is dumber than a sack of sand. He will bark at anything and everything, or just at nothing at all. If I didn't like my neighbor so much I would have a stack of police reports at least a foot high.

This is only something to be done by a very knowledgable breeder, and even then, is done rarely. And if you even have to ask a public message board this question, the answer is NO!

Do you know every dog and its littermates for the last several generations of there pedigree? Do you know of any health problems in these generations? Have they all had health testing done?

Are these dogs Chs and such wonderful specimans of the breed that you need to double up on their genes? Remember, you also double up on the bad genes. If you have any recessive health problems lurking they WILL come out with this so close a breeding.

Yes, some dog breeders do this, i dont know if its against the law or not, but it should be, interbreeding makes the offspring weak and vulnerable to diseases and viruses. The only way you can avoid this kind of offspring is to try to choose the most energetic and excited puppy. The lachrymose ones are probably already diagnosed with a disease.

I have never seen nor heard of any birth defects on inter-breed dogs like extra toes, so stop being silly about it. I had a golden retriever pup who was diagnosed with a brain tumor because her parents probably inter-breed. Its very painful to have to put your dog to sleep because she loses her motor functions as well as her memory and mind itself.

Why do you people answer questions when you DON'T have a CLUE???

That close a breeding is called INBREEDING. Further out relative breedings is LINE-BREEDING.

It is a very effective tool for those who know what they're doing(NOT illegal, you doof!) to lock in the desired traits of a breed. Of course it will lock in UN-desired traits so you have to study your lines & the individuals therein & CULL hard.

Obviously the person asking is NOT capable of such & should NOT be breeding guppies, let alone dogs.

You can breed Father to Daughter (line breeding) I wouldn't though unless you have done extensive research on the lineage. You create more problems than what it is worth....NEVER breed dogs related on the mother's side!

Okay, here it is...

"Whether you inbreed, linebreed, or outcross may have an effect on the incidence of genetic disease in the offspring. Inbreeding is the mating of two individuals that are related through one or more common ancestors. The closest form of inbreeding involves parent-child and brother-sister matings. Linebreeding, a form of inbreeding, usually involves mating more distantly related dogs. The rate of polygenic and recessively inherited diseases tends to increase with inbreeding, because the chance that the two animals carry the same mutation is greater when the dogs are related. Outcrossing is the mating of two dogs of the same breed that are otherwise virtually unrelated. "

This is called inbreeding and is done to keep a particular trait going. It also keeps congenital defects moving along. This is why dog breeds who have very exaggerated features often have the most health problems. I wouldn't recommend it.

can? yes
should you? no
if you talking about line breeding never go closer than the dogs uncle/aune or vice versa niece/ nephew.
if the DNA matches to closely you will run into a lot of health issues with the dogs
