It's like "I'm a Marxist. I follow Groucho Marx". This is a pun, because a Marxist is a follower of Karl Marx. Groucho Marx was a comedian, so being a follower of Groucho Marx does not make you a Marxist in the original political sense.

As closely as possible, bearing in mind subtle shifts from language to language that can be overcome by context.

From the French
"Je suis Marxiste" : "I am Marxist"

"tendence" from tendencer: to tend, follow.

Groucho: who is not buried in Grant's tomb.

Literally: "I am a Marxist, (who) follows Groucho."

If one wished to make an equivalent statement in English, this is it:

"I'm a Marxist - a Groucho Marxist"

i am a marxist - i belong to the groucho faction.

....

when marxism was at its peak in the 1920s-50s there were two great marxist philosophies or factions ('tendences' in french).

the 'trotskyist' faction taught that workers could be fully free only in a society where the government was subject to a process of constant review and revision ('permanent revolution' ). the 'stalinist' faction believed that to succeed communism needed a strong and stable government.

trotskyists and stalinists hated each other (trotsky had been murdered on the orders of moscow's central government). french intellectuals who claimed to be marxist always identified themselves as from a trotskyist or stalinist faction.

je suis marxiste - tendence stalin

je suis marxiste - tendence trotsky.

groucho marx was an american stooge (one of the marx brothers).

je suis marxiste - tendence groucho seems to be a clever thing to say, but doesn't really mean anything at all.

things that make you look clever without needing to be clever have always appealed to stupid people.
