feed her just the same as before

I feed her her normal pregnancy amount of food which is about half again what she eats normally, but I give it to her in puppy food, which is higher it nutrients, vitamins, and fats than normal food. It's important that you give her a food that has meat as a first ingredient, not corn. (And it would be better if the salt is minimized. A lot of commercial dog foods have a high salt content for "flavor".) I give her cooked, unseasoned, boneless chicken or good quality beef to help her out, as well.

Sometimes, I have to adjust this amount and give her more as she goes along. The more puppies there are, the more milk she produces, and the more nutrition she needs to keep up.

Call your vet and ask for specifics according to the breed, size of dog, and size of litter, but watch her *very* closely yourself, as well. You'll know if she's not getting enough. It doesn't take long when they're nursing to start to look undernourished, especially if it is a large litter...

Good luck!

Most dams are not interested in eating right after they deliver, but the next day she should begin eating again, Feed her as much as she wants to eat to make sure she has sufficient nutrition for her pups - feed her puppy food or a specially made nursing (lactation) diet. Some dogs can eat 2-3x their normal amount while they are nursing so keep the bowl full at all times.

Make sure you are providing a high quality hi protein diet for her. She will need to eat about 2 maybe 3 times the normal amount of food to produce adaquate milk for the pups.
She will be hungry and eat way more food so just put down a dish of dry food and keep it full all the time. And lots of fresh water too.

Puppy food for nursing mothers. I also gave my dog yogart. When she felt like eating she did. I always had food down for her. Whe she didn't want to leave the pups, I brought her water to drink. It's a lot of work for her, and she was always licking them. I spoiled her when she had her pups. Giving her extras. But when she was getting ready to wean the pups, I also helped her then. I got the puppy formula, and mixed it with baby rice cereal, and fed them that. Then I changed it to puppy dog food(canned) with the formula. Just make sure she is eating, and getting some excerise also. I would give my dog a break from the pups. Not long, but I took her for our daily walk. She loved it. Gave her time with me, and a little break from the pups.

Just spoil her while she is feeding them. Give her extra little things that will be good for her.To make sure that it helps with the milk she is giving her little ones.

Hope this helps a little, and good luck with your new pups.

During lactation you should feed puppy food because the extra calcium helps her and the puppies.
