I'm assuming the hair color did not come with directions.

Wash your hair 24 hours before you plan to dye it. This will make sure your scalp has some natural oils on it to protect your skin from the chemicals. Don't use any hairstyling products after you wash it, either.

Before you dye it, you might want to put on some rubber gloves (dark colors WILL stain your skin and nails horribly).

Prepare the dye.

If it's in a squeeze-bottle, follow these directions:
1. Part your hair in sections, say, three - front, middle, and back of head.
2. Take the squirt-bottle along the roots of the first section (the front), work it in, from the roots to the tips. Work quickly, from front to back.
3. You want to use all or as much of the dye as you can. If you have thick, long hair, I'd suggest you use two kits. Basically, you want your hair soppy. This is the best way to make sure you've got even coverage.
4. Leave the dye on for 15-20 minutes; spot-check it (rinse a thin strand out under the faucet to see if it's the right colour). If it's not done yet, wait a little longer. No longer than an hour, maximum - for ANY dye job.
5. Rinse the dye out, until the water is clear. Use a tiny bit of a mild shampoo just to get the last bit out.

If your dye is mix-it-in-a-bowl, put-it-on-with-a-brush, follow these directions.
1. Mix it up.
2. Get your hair sectioned up as before.
3. Start brushing the dye into your hair, from root to tip. Glop it on there if you want. Too much is better than not enough, I promise.
4. Same as 4 above.
5. Same as 5 above.

It's pretty simple, you chose probably the easiest way to dye your hair (lighter to darker!).

yikes! never use a box haircolor. they are the absolute worst thing you can do for your hair!!!! I have many friends that went to beauty school and I've learned a lot.

go get your hair done by a professional, or go to a beauty supply shop and you'll have to buy a couple different things to mix the color yourself. (a salesperson should help you pick out the right color).

apply the color in sections. it's the best way to get all over color.

and i repeat...do not use box haircolor from walgreens, walmart, etc...

It's quite easy, just make sure that you're not allergic to it by doing a skin test. Instructions should be inside the box. I use L'oreal all the time.

Best way is to section hair off and dye from front to back, roots first then all over.
