Get a training collar. If the dog is destructive when you are not home, buy a pet carrier or kennel for him/her. My dogs love their kennels now, and we are both glad to see each other when I get home.

This is called separation anxiety since I assume you are not there when it happens or you would stop him....This is what dogs do when you havent taught them that its ok to be alone and that you will always come back. You taught him this bad behaviour! How you ask ?? well I bet when he was a puppy you brought him everywhere with you or you were unemployed and were home all the time. Whatever the reason in his puppyhood you rarely left him alone. So now you have to reverse the process...very hard but not impossible........Step 1 buy your dog lots of toys like a Kong which you can fill with peanut butter or a treat ball that dispenses treats as they roll it around. Chew toys like Nylabones which they cant choke on. Also hide dog cookies around the house before you leave...stinky ones like liver treats. Step 2 after buying these toys and loading them up leave for 5-10 minutes and when you come back if he has started to destroy stuff say NO, BAD!! firmly but without losing your temper and then encourage him to play with the toys you bought praising him all the time for doing this proper behaviour. Once he settles in chewing them or licking the peanutbutter out of a kong. Leave again this time for 10-15 minutes. If he is destroying once again when you return do the same as before and dont pet or greet him at all until he is chewing on the right toys when you tell him to. Repeat Repeat Repeat!!!! Soon he will understand that this is what he is supposed to do instead of what he was doing before. Hitting him screaming at him etc is only punishment you arent teaching him what he should do instead!! Beating your dog when he chews up your shoe for example is only teaching him that he gets punished when you see him doing it on the other hand saying NO firmly while taking the shoe away and then handing him a chew toy to chomp on instead is way better because you are telling him what you dont want followed by what you do want. This is the true way to teach your dog it is called re-direction and it really does work!!!!! And remember your dog is doing this because he misses you and wants your attention and to a dog yelling and hitting him is still attention even if it is negative attention So remember if you come home and he has destroyed things again dont give him any attention until he is chewing the things you want him too then and only then reward and praise him with affection. GOOD LUCK remember this will take alot of patience to correct!!

There are no miracle cures for dog problems.
If you want to keep the dog spend time training the dog.
In this case maybe and indoor crate when you are gone so the dog does not have access to the entirehouse to tear up???
Get into a training class if your dog is not safe in a class setting get some one on one help first.
If you want to fix the problem you are going to have to spend some time and put forth some effort to get it under control.

If you catch him in the act you have to smack him, and fairly hard, and you must continue to do this whenever you see him doing it. If he is already finished with something, and he has done it fairly recently, you grab him by the neck or collar and drag him to the mess, then, with his nose pointed at the mess, you must smack him... BUT if he has made a mess and it is fairly old or older, do NOT punish him, its possible that he has already forgotten

Also, if your not into doing that, a cage is a VERY good way to punsih your dog... Dogs do NOT like cages, they are confined and they hate that. Get a cage that fits your dog size, you might want to look at garage sales for cheaper ones, and put him into the cage whenever he does somethingbad. It also solves the problem if you leave the house frequently, but if you do, you shouldnt have a dog. =\

Crate training is very important. It keeps the dog from destroying the house and helps with potty training also. Most dogs will not use the bathroom in their crate.

A pet carrier is the best thing to use. Keep them in it while you gone or sleeping. Let them out while you are there and can watch them. If you catch them doing something just take a rolled up newspaper and swat them with it. After you do that a few times you will only have to show them the newspaper and say NO. That should help, Good Luck I am going through the same thing right now.

Crate training is the best way to control your dogs when you are not home. when you are home leave the door open and soon you will find that they will even go inside while you are home and sleep in it on there own. Dogs are more secure when in a smaller space. They feel safe. do not use it for punishment or they will hate the crate.

Does this happen when you are gone , home, or both? If is is while your gone it is possible your dog has separation anxiety. This will cause them to destroy things until you return home. If it is while you are home the dog needs some training and needs to know the rules.

Does he/she do this when you are gone? If so, confine them to one room (depending on the size of the dog) while you are gone. Remove anything that you don't want destroyed and then give him/her something to do while you are gone a toy, bone to chew, etc. If it's while you are there, keep and eye on him/her and make them stay in the room you are in. Maybe he/she is just bored. Take him/her for a walk and or play until he/she is tired so it'll sleep instead of destroy things.

crate training sounds like a good plan. possibly get another pet to keep him company? definitely play w/him when u get home - lots of walking/running. (saw that on the dog whisperer) leave lots of dog toys 4 him.
