even though we are all girls here, I was thinking about training my son the wayI trained my girls. I trained my girls by letting them go bare butt and always taking them potty when my mom or I would go, then when my little girl was potty training, we would even have her go when myoldest would go.
the guard seems to be irritating to him, so I thought about leaving that off and teach him to holditdown with his handor to tuck it in between his legs.

any other suggestions, I would appreciate it.
any tips as to when to have him start standing and teach him how to aim too would be appreciated.

Nice answers, thank you everyone, all good suggestions, and I will try to see what is best for him, I think I like the idea of setting him backwards on the pot, so he gets the idea sooner, especially when there aren't any men around. Thank you all so very much

My Godson is to short to stand in front of the toilet with out making a mess so he gets on the toilet and puts his knees on the seat and faces the backwards, he holds the toilet lid, it makes it easier for him and its also like standing because he gets the idea of aim. Its not so much a mess either because he is right over the seat its hard for him to pee every where!!!

My son would lean forward a bit and aim it down, but that was only when we couldn't find the guard. It didn't bother him, so I don't have any suggestions on that. As far as taking him potty when you go, it's totally fine unless it bothers your daughters. He's in the elimination control stage, and won't worry about modesty until he's 4 or 5.

He learned to stand up by watching the boys at daycare when he was 3. I was so worried about it as a single mom with no brothers. But the other boys did it and he wanted to be like them and one day I just caught him standing. It was a big relief.

We taught our oldest son to pee in the potty, by having him sit down and push it between his legs. This worked, but definitely made a mess- guard or no guard! :( Plus, we had the added negative of re-teaching him to stand as he got a little older. That didn't take as long as the initial potty training, but I still felt like it was an unneccessary nuisance.
With our youngest, we trained him to stand right from the start. At first he was a little too short to stand and get it over the rim of the toilet, so I would help hold him up a little. He's grown an inch or so taller now, and can reach it just fine. Also, since a little boy's privates stick almost straight out as opposed to down, you will have to teach them to point it down. Although good luck on that one- I agree with the first response that even adult men don't aim well. ;) And you will definitely want to move anything from around the toilet before you start training him (as my pee-splattered basket of magazines can attest).
If you want your son to start standing from the start (my reccommendation), but want to use a training potty, they do make a standing "urinal" type trainer seat for boys. It's called "Peter Potty" (believe it or not), and it's a flushable urinal for potty-training boys. I've seen them at Babys R Us and stores like that. ;)

My son learned to sit down also. We didn't have the guard b/c my oldest son flushed it when he was potty training!! So, he just pushed it down. We live in the country so he learned to stand up by going outside. But, if you live in town, it may not be the best thing to do having your toddler peeing all over the yard and everyone staring!

I would definately teach him how to sit first...Standing can come at a later date. You can teach aim with putting cheerios in the toilet.

fruit loops in the toilet. you cant train boys like girls....boys are alot harder to train. I trained 4 boys using the fruit loops and a soap smiley face on the back of the lid

i had my son start off sitting down and holding himself but i had him face backwards and once he got used to holding himself and aiming that way one day i pointed out to him how daddy stands up and then before i knew it he just did it on his own.

boys will pick up as they grow old..... they will throw away the diaper later if they dont feel comfortable...

About training him.. dont train him as girl or they may turn gay!!

About aiming, even adults dont aim good.. not to worry about that!!

teach him how to aim by putting cherrios in the toilet and tell him to make them sink. you can also put bubbles in the toilet and tell him to try and make bubbles. hope this helps.
