I am having an argument with somebody who thinks that it is only the male cows that get turned into steak etc. As you never see a field full of bulls as they will fight. I say say that it is both the males and females! WHAT DO YOU THINK?

It is both, but not bulls and cows. Cows are females that have given birth, bulls are uncastrated males. Steers are what mainly gets harvested (castrated males) because they don't have the testorone that bulls do and can be in the same pen. You can put a group of bulls in the same pasture, as long as they have been together since they were young. Heifers are the females that are younger females that are made into beef products. Some cows and bulls are culled and used for leaner meat, but it is a small percentage. Visit the website below for some stats.

Both sexes are eaten as beef, both are made into hamburger, steaks, roasts, etc. Whether it is a steak or not has nothing to do with what sex they are. Feedlots have more steers than heifers because they gain weight faster, but there are pens of heifers there. I say heifers because, here in Kansas anyway, only young cattle are slated for slaughter, it is a way to guard against unsafe beef being sold. You can eat an older animal of either sex but it generally isn't as tender. Dairy cows (Holstein, Jersey, etc) are the cows that are generally used for milking. They don't generally milk Angus, Limousine, etc. These we have for beef production. It takes a Holstein a long time to gain enough weight to be eaten.
