Would you report anyone who has a puppy mill? And do you think these puppy mills need to be shut down. I think everyone needs to be educated about them and help these poor animals out.....

Yes i do know all about them. I had a puppy to die in 2 1/2 weeks of buying one. It had parvo and parasites. The owner said he was caught up on his shots and wormings. And the both problems he had was very lethal. And i am educated on this matter.

Yes I would & have done so in the past. Yes I think they need to be shut down & the people who run them put away somewhere. These people only care about making money. They do not care about the animals at all. And yes, I think people need to be educated about them so more people can help the animals. I have spent my life working with abandoned & abused animals. I have worked for the S.P.C.A. and several animal shelters. I have seen first hand what puppy mills are & what damage they do. It makes me sick. Animals deserve so much better than what most people give them. People need to be educated on all aspects of animals care. That includes learning about the bad stuff too. Animals have no choice in how they are treated...it should be up to us to give them the respect they deserve. All life is important.

It depends on what you mean by puppy mill. If you mean a place that keeps their dogs in filth and small cages, then yes. If you mean a place that is abusive to their dogs, then yes.

If you mean commercial breeders however, that is a different story. Puppy mills are a very small percentage of CBs. There are many commercial breeders who take good care of their animals. In fact most of them are USDA licensed and have pages and pages of USDA requirements to adhere to (as will we ALL if PAWS passes). Some of them even go to classes to learn more about genetics. Not all CBs are uncaring and most want to do a good job.

If all CBs were shut down, where would your average pet owner get their PB puppies? They are not going to stop wanting PB puppies. If they cannot get them from a local breeder they will get them somewhere. Look at the mess in California. Make breeding almost impossible and then wonder why so many sickly Mexican puppies are being smuggled in. Well...DUH! I say better a CB or backyard breeder than a (true) puppy mill in a place without basic abuse laws!

If there were no CBs, PBs would be only for the very rich. Is that fair? PB's would be a rarity as there is no way show breeders could supply the pet buying public with all the puppies they demand. The choice will become either a $10,000 puppy or a 4 week old sickly puppy bred in Mexico for $50 and sold out of a box.

If you want to take out your anger, take it out on the TRUE puppy mills and not all CBs. Or take it out on some of the people here who are having litters yet are totally clueless as to the most basic standards of care about whelping/puppy care/dam care, not to mention a total lack of knowledge about genetics.

As far as someone posting a link from HSUS, I wouldn't believe ANYTHING they had to say about ANYTHING! Liars and con artists who want to put an end to ALL pets! PERIOD!

Jan - I have also heard of many, many cases like that and couldn't agree with you more. Animal control is out of control in some places and they seize dogs for stupid reasons, it happens all the time. Look at HEART in NM or the MSN in LA. They can now seize your dogs if they don't have appropriate toys or you don't have a fenced yard among other ridiculous things. The problem is nobody cares until it is THEIR dogs being confinscated and PTS.

Yes, I have reported Puppy Mills before. There need to be shut down. My 2 Chihuahua's are from such a place, one them had already 3 Surgery's Back and Knees, the other one suffer from Digestion problems, both are on Prescription Diet.So far they made it, now 3 years young and very play full.
But countless other dogs have to keep on suffering.

Yes I would report anyone that was abusing a dog. Puppy mill/backyard breeders need to be stopped. I don't know how ANYONE that claims to love dogs or cats can allow their pet to breed. There are millions of healthy, loving animals killed every year because there are not enough homes for all that are born...yet they keep breeding. Senseless.

Yes I would.
Honesty I knew about Puppy Mills but I did not really realize what actually they dose to Dogs. It is crime, if you know some one abuse children, then if you did not take action, I think it is crime as well... Puppy Mills are the same.

What a puppy mill is - HUGELY up to opinion. What the internet and others say it is and the reality is vastly different. I know someone who was targeted and attacked for having a "puppy mill" - the fact was his dogs were well fed, well cared for but didn't like tresspassers so therefore were deemed "unsocialized". An internet campaign was started and people who didn't know him, had never seen his dogs other than staged photos (NOT the way his dogs were every day) and all convicted him. His dogs had plenty of food, water, shelter, health care...that did not matter because he bred dogs. His rights were totally violated. And the further fact was the dogs stolen from him and 'adopted out' - one day he was driving through town and passed one on a leash with a new owner...the dog was dragging the guy down the street trying to get to the truck to go home. Sounds like a mistreated dog? One who cringed when his owner came in? Sounds like a dog who missed his owner enough to recognize the TRUCK!!! I personally saw the dogs and would bet that many dogs of readers on here have it worse than his did. The facts don't really matter as much as the rest...after all pictures don't lie right? No but the ones staged don't tell the truth either. That's one I know for fact the truth of. I don't know about others...but it's cast a huge light onto the people who target without KNOWING - seeing for themselves. The same stuff was said as every other "puppy mill" raid and I know in this case for fact it was not true. And if anyone had half a brain they'd know it too but people don't think.

Reason being - this guy was supposedly selling 500 puppies a week (NOT TRUE). Now do the math on that. Let's say he was doing it illegally and selling at 6 weeks. 6 weeks X 500 puppies means there were 3,000 puppies on hand at the time of the confiscation...plus all the breeders...and because dogs only come in season to breed twice a year (another fact people don't seem to know when talking about breeding a female 5-6 times a years!) the numbers needed to produce 500 puppies a week are staggering. Even 100 puppies a week. NO ONE EVER ASKED what happened to all those dogs because they NEVER EXISTED!! The fact is it didn't help the animals out...it ripped them from a home where they had all their needs met including their instinct to herd. It placed them dead or with strangers. This person received death threats...for something he never did!! His rights have been violated over and over and over. He spent time in jail for something he never did. I FED HIS DOGS during one time in jail - I know for a FACT they were fed and cared for.

I think the education needs to be everyone accusing needs to have it happen to them...come home and find their animals gone and be arrested. See what it's like to be accused and convicted of something you never did, and have your animals removed and sold before even going to trial.

I don't think it's wrong to breed and I don't think it's wrong if someone has 50 or 100 dogs and takes care of them more power to them. It's not something most would want to do but most people today can't comprehend 50 of anything. And the perception is based on I don't know what. 50 dogs by a breeder is bad 50 dogs in a rescue isn't? And it can be the same 50 dogs in the same or worse conditions (at the 'rescue).

So no - what is accused of being a puppy mill I don't think should be shut down because there are too many people targeted and harassed and animals killed for nothing. There is far more harm to done IMO by all the pugapoos and labradoodle and other puppy producers (not breeders) done and people who just let their animals roam and produce litter after litter with no regard to any goal - that is just as damning to the "overpopulation" problem as responsible breeders are. No one does a thing about them...that's acceptable but the person with 60 registered working dogs isnt'. And in such a situation people who know you are innocent remain quiet because of the intimidation their dogs are next. I fail to see how that is justice or helping the ANIMALS. It is conspiracy, intimidation and theft. And it's done with the blessing of the courts based on photos that were staged and set up. That is the fact of what I SAW.

The places that keep their animals in poor conditions and provide no care for anything - yes I'd say something about them for their treatment of the animals, not because of being a "puppy mill". But then too - if not for the popularity and demand for the high $ mutts there's no incentive to breed them. IMO poodles are the least of the breeds to be kept in volume due to the care they need. But if a breeder has 50 poodles that are healthy and cared for it doesn't mean they should be turned in. I know also a breeder of collies - and his is one of the nicest, cleanest kennels of any breed I've ever seen.

I also saw 'puppy mill' advocates cheer when a Doberman and Rottweiller kennel caught fire. Even though dogs were killed in the wing that burned. If it's for the good of the animals why be happy that dogs died? I dont believe they were a "puppy mill" either - they are a breeder but their dogs are well cared for and I know if I bought a Dobe from them it would be healthy and of good temperment or they'd replace it. Puppy mills just for profit don't stand behind their dogs. And in some cases breeders don't either. In some cases they shouldn't have to....example...someone buys a puppy that was fully vaccinated for everything. Five MONTHS later the puppy dies of parvo...and it's found out the people's OTHER DOG was NOT vaccinated (meaning could have carried it in)...WHY is that the fault of the breeder? Personal responsibility means nothing?!!
I think far too many people who don't see the reality of what they're attacking mean to help animals but in so many cases don't...they condemn the animal to a worse fate than they came from. That is what I know for fact. What is represented to be - if it were true and really exists - I would back to shut down. But there have been so many lies and innocent people (and their dogs) whose lives have been torn apart I cannot and will not ever join an internet campaign. We simply were not there and don't know the facts.

I would report them so fast their heads would spin from the speed.

I have noticed a lot of comments about backyard breeders, people seem to automatically lump us in as part of the puppy mill disaster.
******THERE ARE MAJOR, MAJOR DIFFERENCES ******
** GENERALLY ** A puppy mill is any facility that keeps the animal in small wire pens about the size of a medium dog carrier.
Some have small wire "runs" about the size of a large clothing trunk. That makes it easier to clean, they just pee and poop between the wire, if some of it sticks and creates a build up....oh well.
Some never see the outside of the pen, they are in it 24/7. Their babies are taken away as soon as they have teeth coming in (usually at 4 to 5 weeks) This is so the mom will come in heat sooner so she can be bred back to back to back............
The puppies are all thrown together with a pan of cheap food and water, it they live or die it makes little difference to the "miller" as they are mass producing, so a few deaths are no big deal, especially if they die young before they have invest much in the puppy.
As soon as the mom is unable to produce any live babies she will be panned out (hopefully to a shelter) or just knocked in the head and thrown in a ditch. They will not feed anything that does not bring in a cash flow.
You can forget any health guarantee beyond 24 hours, no shots, now wormings. And most references seem to have had their phones disconnected.

I consider myself a backyard breeder, to me that implies:
They usually have only one or two seperate breeds, normally they do not cross-breed to produce the "designer dogs", they operate out of their home and their kennel is the yard.
IF they have a web page it probably consists of 1 or 2 pages or often just as a mention on other breeders web pages.
My dogs have the entire yard to run, dig, roll and play in. They are probably on a set income so they are unable to show, they will sometimes get that small roast (instead of the larger one) to be sure they have enought money to get the dogs their food and heartworm meds that month.
They have a few litters a year, usually less than a miller has per month!!
They set their girls out between heats, depending on how quick she comes back in heat after they have weaned her babies.
I DO NOT WEAN BEFORE 8 weeks of age, that does not mean the mom has any milk, only that the babies are allowed to be with her for comfort and security.
They handle and play with the puppies on a regular basis.
They give shots and worm treatments on a tight schedule.
They probably dont have Champions in their dogs immediate background (who can pay $2500.00 for a Champion stud fee)
They TRY to produce puppies with as few of the genetic problems associated to that particiular breed.
Their health guarantee covers the normal puppy killers like, Parvo and Distemper, they have proof of shots and worm treatments.
They are probably on a first name basis with their vet.
Personally I can provide enough references to freeze up a powerful computer, WITH phone numbers.
They will keep up with owners of their babies, I somtimes feel I am a pest........but I do so love to get pictures of my past puppies.
So yes, I think I am a backyard breeder. I love my animals, they are my sorce of income but they are also loved.
I have 4 with me now that are retired, they have paid my bills their entire lives, so they will remain with me as long as they are allowed to stay on this earth.
This is just my opinion, but many people get backyard breeders confused with puppy mills.
NOT THE SAME THING
That is like compairing an "out house" to a mansion.
