i dont think Caffeine can CAUSE any mental health problem, but it can certainly affect you if you have any sort of anxiety disorder and make it worse.
"Caffeine is a potent chemical with psychoactive effects that our body has absolutely no requirement for. Research has indicated that caffeine can interfere with our brain chemistry and therefore can be a factor in contributing to exacerbating stress, anxiety, panic, depression and insomnia. Caffeine stimulates the release of excess stress hormones via its stimulant effects on the adrenal glands. it stimulates the pancreas to secrete insulin which lowers blood sugar so the body has to compensate by releasing stress hormones which cause the body to release energy, fat and glucose reserves to stabilize blood sugar levels. Natuarally ,caffeine being a stimulant can have several effects on your body. But, it depends on the amount your are intaking. It can elevate levels of anxiety but can also have a rebound effect when you stop taking it, if you were consuming high quantities. So, if you stop drinking coffee, for example, after drinking everyday x 4 years x 6 cups a day, of course you will feel down. But, I dont believe that you can catagorize it as depression. Just remember rule #1 anything in moderation.

As much of a link as there is between mental health problems and any other mind altering substance. Caffeine, especially in high doses, has a marked effect on the central nervous system, on thought processes, and on attitude. Think: alcohol is legal, but that doesn't mean it's harmless! This is just anecdotal, but a friend literally saved his marriage AND his health by quitting his coffee (20-30 cups a day) habit.

I've never heard of any connection between caffiene and true mental health problems (I mean a real psychiatric diagnosis like schizophrenia, mood disorders, etc). However, I've noticed for myself that it keeps me awake if I drink sodas or tea in the afternoon or evening. Also, "mental health problems" is kind of vague. If you're concerned, a psychiatrist can do an evaluation and assess whether there really is a medical diagnosis involved. Good luck!

I never read so... but I'm sure that high caffeine intake can mimic manic depression or ADHD, especially if someone has a body chemistry that is sensitive to it... For that matter, for someone who is extremely hypoglycemic (sensitive to sugar), the "sugar high" can make one show symptoms also seen in mania and then the "low" from not having enough sugar can mimic depression or actually make one feel depressed.

I don't think there's a direct connection but what I know is that caffeine intake will make you not to fall asleep easily and if you didn't get enough sleep you can't think straight most of the times.
