Remember Nissan is owned by French automaker Renault, also Nissan has their old brand name is Datsun. Nissan, Mazada, and Mitsubishi are run by non-Japanese person to own them.

Largest is Toyota.
2nd largest is Honda
Although Nissan is Japan based it is not totally independent

The largest Japanese automaker is Toyota/Lexus. The next largest is Honda/Acura. Nissan/Infiniti is still the third, and they aren't owned by Renault, Renault just holds 40% share.

I believe the order is Toyota, Nissan, Subaru. Mazda is not as large, though in US, its sales are more known than Subaru. Plus, Mazda is owned under Ford's corporate umbrella. The three I listed are independent, at least from outside influences. They each have a stake in other industries and manufacturers.
