Yes, we have law called the Word of Wisdom which was given in 1833. It says that we should not drink hot drinks (which was later interpreted as meaning tea or coffee), should not drink alcohol, smoke or take illegal drugs. We should also eat meat only sparingly and eat lots of whole grains and vegetables. Church members who abide by this law live about ten years longer than the average.

It is a myth that Mormons don't drink caffeine. Some believe that the ban on tea and coffee is to do with caffeine (bear in mind that 1833 was way before caffeine was discovered) but since we don't know for sure many church members (myself included) will drink coke.

Sarell, how bizarre that you think Mormons are allowed to have sex in their relationships? We are very strict on sex being for within marriage only. A Mormon who has an affair, or has sex before marriage, would be called to repentence or excommunicated.

I was one in the past. Their Word of Wisdom found one of their books, called the Doctrine and Covenants, recommends that they abstain from eating meat except in time of winter or famine. Tobacco and tea are specifically mentioned. Good dietary eating is probably recommended by every religion. No one abstains from meet however and they try to obtain from caffeine. They go to far in their view on alcohol. That law or recommendation was written as a result of Joseph Smith's wife who constantly nagging about the brothers spitting their tobacco in the spit tunes and filling the house with smoke. Drinking wine, which was clearly the drink of Jesus and the apostles has been proven to be healthy for the heart and cholesterol if done in moderation. I think God knows that.

Ok..here it goes...and supposedly the 7th day Adventists have this..but don't quote me..I just know that their leader Ms. White was the Secretary of Joseph Smith so she like the Doctrine of Covenants which is the book that holds our dietary regimen...

1. NO coffee or black tea
2. No tobacco
3. no alcohol
4. be moderate in addictive drugs LIKE caffeine...

that said..there is no problem with soft drinks in general...it is a personal issue and it WILL NOT keep a Mormon from going into the Temple..so it is fine..but if you are addicted to Diet Coke for example because "you have to have it" then YES..you have broken the rule..but there is just as much caffeine in some energy drinks and aspirin and chocolate as in a Diet Coke..so as said.,..MODERATION....BUT not in all things...no real health benefits come out of drinking or smoking ...which is why we can't..even if they seem bad..there is still damage done...liver, discernment, ability to drive etc..

Those are the main DONT's but there are several DOs.
1) herbs are to be used with thanksgiving and prudence
2)..Yea, flesh also of beasts and of the fowls of the air, I, the Lord, have ordained for the use of man with thanksgiving; nevertheless they are to be used sparingly;13 And it is pleasing unto me that they should not be used, only in times of winter, or of cold, or famine.
3) All grain is good as well as fruit of the vine (grapes yes but not wine)

the results of this are numerous
Mormons live longer by not having cirrhosis issues(alcohol) alcohol poisoning, hangovers, stomach ulcers (tannic acid in coffee and tea), cancer and emphysema due to smoking and chewing tobacco etc..

we also don't have the DUIs or public drunkenness or other stupid things that happen so often with teens or college kids..

MOST IMPORTANT THOUGH....

we save our money and we don't have life long addictions...that we have become victim to and codependants of...

Yes, we do. The group of commandments and promises from God about health is referred to as the "Word of Wisdom".

Many people are familiar with the idea that members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have been commanded not to drink coffee or tea or alcoholic beverages. In addition, we are commanded to stay away from tobacco and illegal drugs. The Word of Wisdom also talks about how God has created healthy foods for us to use with thanksgiving, and encourages us to eat, for example, fruits, vegetables and grains.

One of my favorite parts of the Word of Wisdom is the part that contains the promises that people will get for following its principles. It promises wisdom and knowledge, and health and stamina. Who wouldn't want those blessings? Another obvious blessing from following this health code is that we are protected from addictions to things like alcohol and tobacco. Anyone who lives this code has access to these promises.

I know that living the Word of Wisdom has greatly blessed my life. Check it out!

The "Word of Wisdom " also encourages retire early and wake up early so we can be more healthy. Excercise is also encourage. It is basically a health code we live by.

Considering how the world is now, the word of wisdom makes a lot of sense don't you think?

I don't think they're supposed to drink caffeine 'cause it's a drug. Although I don't know of too many Mormon's who've actually practiced this...

I've heard that they can't drink or smoke or do drugs. And they can't drink any form of caffeine. There maybe more restrictions than that those are just the ones that I know.
