Look at both sides of each party, identify with which sides holds your beliefs and there you go. You can also be an independant which means you do not subscribe to a particular political party and just vote for whoever you identify yourself with more at the time of election.

This question is going to spark a lot of bashing of the other group.
Democrats are for the people. Republicans will have you believe they are baby killers and tree huggers and they love welfare moms and immigrants. But what Republicans won't tell you is that you won't benefit from a Republican politician unless you are in the top 1% of the richest people in the world. They get all the tax cuts and freebies, while the poor working class suffers.
So if you have a good education and a heart, you'll make a great Democrat. Good luck!

I recommend you study the political issue of today and then check out the positions of the two parties from their websites.
However, I also believe you should look at other parties as well. Such as the Libertarian party.
Personally, I believe the libertarian party is the best. The reasons are too many to state here, but the Republican and Democratic parties are both poor choices.

Both are evil and rotten, both are corrupt. Everyone knows that.
If you make over $300,000 a year you will vote Republican. Money, Power and greed is the motive, they got the tax cuts.
Life is filled with choice's, I am working class, i will vote Democratic.
The lessor of two known evils. As far as who I will vote for makes no difference as long as he/she is a Democrat.
Republicans want to end Social Security at any cost, even if they send the USA into bankruptcy with debt.
Under Republicans debt has never been higher, never.
Under Republicans Government has never been bigger, I want it smaller. Under Republicans we are not safer now, I want the 22 million illegals who walked into the USA sent home.
Under Republicans we have lost over 2507 brave Americans and we have over 15,000 wounded. The cost of the Republican war in Iraq will be $2 trillion over ten years and of course Republicans want the working class to pay their bill. Republicans also love to send others off to fight and die in Iraq while they will not serve, like Bu$h, Cheney and Rice.
Under Republicans the USA lost a whole City. Republicans failed to protect all Americans on Sept. 11th and before, in Corporate America we fire failures.

Best thing i could tell you is to do a little reading. Not being obnoxious, if you research both sides i am sure you will find one that speaks more to your point of view. That does not mean you have to necessarily stay on that side, you may find a candidate that you relate to more,or that tackles the issues that are of importance to you. That person may not be either side, there are other categories that go hardcore one way, ex: Conservative or Liberal..than you got the ones that meet somewhere in the middle, or don't really want to be categorized( Independent). What is important is that You think for yourself and vote. What really sucks are people who stand around complaining about the world yet they never even bothered to put there input in on election day.
Hey Lisa that's real democratic of you to let this guy think for himself!

Democrats hold mostly to social issues and liberal views. They believe the government should take care of its poor, gays should be able to marry, and a woman has a right to choose to have an abortion.
Republicans hold mostly to values and conservative views. They believe government should not be all inclusive, citizens have a right to gun ownership, laws should be disigned to protect children and families, and prayer should be permitted in schools as freedom of religion.
If you sway more towards one but agree with pieces of the other, you can consider yourself a moderate of the one you agree with most. You can also declare yourself independant.
Overall both parties are full of independantly wealthy, morally corrupt politicians that sway easily to their selected funding sources and break the law on a regular basis and get away with it. It really doesn't matter because they all have the same basic stance on how they view the common people and do what they can to get their dollars and their votes.

Best thing for you to do is to look up the political platforms for each of the parties. The national parties have them posted. Most states have refined, subordinate and/or local platforms posted. Decide which one most aligns with your views. If you are like most, you won't agree whole-heartedly agree with everything in a party's platform. The question is whether you are closely aligned enough to hold yourself out as a member of any particular party or if you want to consider yourself an independant (someone who does not hold themselves out as believing in the platform of any particular party). Don't forget to look at parties other than Republican or Democrat, even if you may think they are extremists or fanatics. They may cause you to re-examine or question your personal political beliefs.

First look at the party platforms. Then, look at what the leaderships of the parties are actually doing (talk is cheap, after all) and decide which suits you better.
Don't limit yourself to being Democratic or Republican, either. There are other parties out there (small, but there.)

Most people vote their pocketbook (How much will they give me for nothing) or name recognition (I've heard of that guy). Communism took over in countries where the poor were promised more only to find they were just as poor as before.
We need grass roots politicians who are more in touch with the guy out there slugging it out everyday to earn a living. No one I know has enough money or contacts to even consider being in politics. I am more independent as I get older but was more republican before. They all make me mad. No one hears "my" vote anymore.

guess it depends on whether or not you want to return to the dark ages. Or move on to an enlightened age.
Dark Ages: most of Europe was provincial and poorly educated if at all. Controlled almost totally by Christian Church
Enlightened Age: Science and exploration is the matrix of this age. Mythology remains mythology and does not enter center stage. An accent on equal rights for all humans. Attention to protecting the planet from the ravages of industrialization,
