It is a slang, I know that, but what the hell does it refer to? Is it like saying damn or $hit? I have had a few people from england say that to me in games and im's.

It's used in the same way:

English guy: "That film was pants!"

US guy: "That movie was crap!"

Not everyone uses it, it's along the lines of out-of-date slang.

It basically means crap, but it's kind of old. People generally do say crap or sh*t now instead. I have absolutely no idea what started that one!

I'm British and it always seemed weird to me!

Well, people used to say "nickers" if they missed a shot, so I guess perhaps it's the more modern version of that

It either means underpants or it means very bad eg "that film was pants".

its like s***, crap, that kind of expression. It also means underpants, like nknickers or panties or Y fronts. We brits, eh?!
