First, contact the seller and let them know if no title is produced you are going to want your money back. Even if you are not going to do that, the bluff will help motivate them. Contact the department of motor vehicles and see if they can find anything from the previous tag number or registration. If you can't get that from the previous owner, there are some otehr resourcs to try. VW buses are a popular car and there are likely some club sites you could go to for help. In addition, there are a lot of VW repair shops, especially in the NE, that could help you. The last thing I would do would be to contact the police, and explain the situation to them. It might be innocent in which case they could help you with the procedures you need to follow, or if there is any fraud involved, they could help track down what should be done legally.

I know some cars were not titled until like 75'. If there is a title then its not a legal sale/purchase without it. Some states like Alabama can not sell a tag without title. Check with the seller and be sure there is a title. If he lost it then go to the DMV and get a form to have it replaced. Also check the doors on the bus for a vin # it should be on the vehicle.
BUT. Check with your title ppl. at the DMV they will help u.

Legally this car still belongs to the previous owner. How do you know if the car wasnt stolen and you gave him your money for it? carfax only goes from 1981 and up, as do most other auto search engines. Is there an old license plate on the van? Go to DMV or Police and have them trace it for you. More than likely, the previous owner has left no trace to be found. While you go to the DMV, see if you can apply for a salvage title like the salvage yards do.
This is why you shouldnt pay for a vehicle up front until you have a signed legal title in your possession 1st.

Contact the DMV with the information taken from the body ID tag. Apply for duplicate title. Make sure that you have a bill of sale, and if this car was not running for any length of time a certificate of non-operation. Make sure you have good information on the person who sold it to you, like a verifiable name address and phone, plus a drivers license number. The reason is that when the title search is done you could end up losing the car (stolen), or paying heavy fines to settle any outstanding registration fees or tickets. These are clearly the responsibility of the seller, and in transactions of older cars it is pretty common for these things to come up.

When you buy a vehicle you give the money, they give you the title, that is the way it works and they cannot (although they did) sell a vehicle without a title. It is their responsibility to get the title to you. I am guessing they jumped the title which means they never signed on. I'll bet they can't even get you the title cuz it's in someone else's name before them. If you paid them by check, put a stop on the check until they produce the title. If you paid cash, call them and demand the title. Good Luck.

If anything..they probably lost it. Tell them to contact the DMV for a lost title. The seller has to be the one to make contact with the DMV. A bill of sale that's written out, even with a notary seal won't gain you access to info on the title. The only bill of sale the DMV will accept from the buyer is the title signed over to you. If you don't get anywhere with that then you may have a scam. Take em to small claims court.

Ok, here's the deal, You can get the title YOURSELF from the DMV. But, since you actually gave someone money without getting the title, I am assuming you also didnt get a receipt of ANY sort. In which case you have just gotten hosed buddy. Now, I would still call my local DMV to see what I can do and follow their direction.

You should contact your State's Dept of Motor Vehicle (or whatever they call themselves) and get information on filing for lost title. Generally you can find the VIN on the vehicle around the engine or inside.
