I have a dachshund (weenie dog). He's been very good with my kids. They are very smart and are easily house trained. A poodle is also good, but you have to keep them groomed.

BOXER

When its comes to children. They are the best breed. As a breeder I have breed many Boxers and if you go look for the most vishious dogs u will see all the top 10 dogs that you should not have around children. I am a mother my self of 3. I have a 11yr old 5yr old and a 3 yr old. The Boxer because of its characteristics. Is highly sought after. The intelligent of the Boxer is remarkable. So very easy to train, Guard Breed. They will protect there family and love ones to the death. So if you spank your children be ware you might will have to put the k-9 out. Because the Dame or Sire might think your hurting them. Beauty- there beauty in there stance posture is top noch. Face is made to look serious 24/7 even though there not. Bravery they will stand up to what ever comes there way that they think will harm there family. Protectiveness is a high characteristic of the Boxer. Power they are very strong. Pations they have the best pations I have ever seen. They can play hours and hours and just keep playing with the kids. Grooming the Boxer has a short coat that will be a minimal. IF you get a Boxer you will have a wonderful companion for many years.

There are so many dogs out there. Some one said a pound pup is nice. And they are. You mentioned a small one so a great Dane is out of the picture. But even thaugh the size is a little alarming they are giant lap dogs. They will sleep with your kids. cuddle play and are Very Gentle the Extreme Lap Dog. Also A Golden Retreiever Is a Very nice dog. They Look big but really they are not that large. And they are considered The top Family dog in the world. If you want an even smaller one Begeals are nice but the have a funny oder and they usually howl at night. If you dont mind the hair A Bearded Collie is another dog that looks alot larger then it is. When you get into Cocker spaniels you are taking a HUGE risk. they have health problems and they are usually VERY Snappy. The Cavileir KIng Charles Spaniel IS awsome if you dont mind taking out a loan to buy it. They are EXPENSIVE in my part of the world.Any small dog you is going to be risky. If you are buying from a breeder then look at the parents temperment. but a small dog is a risk some are Sweet and others can be awful. Also, another idea is to go to a shelter and pick out a few older dogs and then bring your kids back and let them Play with th dog,Let the dog "chose" you. Puppies are nice and cute but you are rasing three kids you dont want to deal with potty training another one and puppy stage chewing and all of the other "AWW Mom look what rex is doing` how cute he like the taste of your italian leather sofa" its just an expresion. But Look into an older dog. Last but not least listen around for a friend or relitive that might be needing dog sitters and do that to test out diffrent breeds. Or if you are lucky they might be getting rid of a trained dog because of a move or somthing like that. Good luck with you search

Okay definitely don't go with a pit bull, they're dangerous. A friend of mine was attacked by one. The have jaws that can lock when the bite, just like a Rotweiller.
Also I wouldn't pick a Shitzu, unless you want a 4th child to take care of. There fur can be difficult to take care of, if you let it grow out.
I wouldn't recommend a chihauhau either, we've had 2 since my 4 year old was born. They are very nervious creatures and little ones can make them even more nervous. The last one we had ran away from hom, no joke! The 4 year old was too much for him, I think.
Also stay away from Chows or anything that is a Chow mixed breed. I have one of those as well, I'm trying to find a new home for him. Chows are very aggressive and are not good to have around children.
I would probably recommend a Jack Russell or a Beagle. Jack Russell's are energetic enough to keep up with the kids and Beagle's are very friendly animals as well.

Any dog could be ok with kids but at three that is very young for a dog.
At three your child does not understand how to be careful around a dog.
Your nine year old is the right age for a dog but the other to are sort of young.
Look at the maintance of several breed and see if you feel you can handle taking care of that type of dog. Also look to see how much training the dog needs and are you capable of doing it on your own or will you need to take come classes.
There are many great dogs out there.Check out www.akc.org to look at a profile of each breed and see what you like and how well that breed would fit into your lifestyal and activity level in your home.
Do some research first to make sure you get a perfect fit.

I think beagles are perfect for small children. They're small, but they don't have that nervous disposition of some of the smaller breeds like chihuahuas or poodles. They are also sturdy enough to handle some rough play and are sweet but they also will be protective of your family without being overly aggressive.

If your heart's not set on a purebred, you can also check out your local animal shelter. The workers there can usually let you know about the dog's eventual size and you can get a good feel for the dog's temperament right from the get-go.

I hope you find a great new friend for your family!

If you want a small dog that is good with kids, I highly recommend the Toy (smallest), Miniature or Standard (largest) poodle. The poodles, great with kids, intelligent, easy to train, and they don't' shed! They're so fun, loyal, and loving. I recommend doing some reading on poodles first. But one note, I do not recommend getting a teacup or a tiny toy poodle because they're too small (2-4lbs) for little kids to play with and it might be dangerous for the little dog. Also, I think the 3 year old child is too young to play with a dog.

K you guys, she said a small dog.

i AGREE, a cavalier king charles spaniel would be Perfect... but if you dont want a rare or expensive one, get a beagle!they are very sweet, and not too rough, and walk nice and dont back too much, but when they do its usually that little howl thing beagles do, which you may hate or may fall in love with. dont get a boxer, they are very active and will probably plow your kids over. A lab will take FAR too much exercise as they are naturally heacvy dogs and require extra effort to keep them healthy IE 2-3 walks a day, and playing A LOT, which if you have kids in school can be a HUGE task.

get a beagle.

Hands down! A "Cavalier King Charles Spaniel". They are nothing like a cocker spaniel in temperment. These dogs are love wrapped in fur. Great w/kids. They have eyest that will just make you melt. They are easy to maintain, they are small but not so small that u have to worry about your 3yr old hurting them. As puppies, they act the same as most breeds....a little hyper, but that passes soon enough. They are also a beautiful looking dog.

All dogs have different personalities, so some in one breed may not be good and others good. But a good breed that usually doesn't have visious dogs, but are playful are Jack Russel Terriers.

go to petfinder.com

It has all the rescues that have pets up for adoption. Often the foster parents will allow you to come and meet the dog before you take it home. They also have on the website if it is a good dog for children.
Good luck dog shopping!

by the way I have a collie Shepard mix. He is the best dog ever. My aunt volunteers for a rescue group and has had many collie shepard mixes. They are always so nice!
