Exotic sports cars are often geared in such a way that one could damage the engine long term if it is never opened up on the highway.
I drove a 92 vette daily for about 6 years. I didn't have any problems with it though because I traveled a lot on highways. I had a rule that I had to break 100 mph at least once a day.

Can you drive your "exotic" car every day? Sure.
Should you? Probably not:
1. Greater risk of theft/vandalism if it's left unattended in public more often
2. Greater risk of damage if it's left unattended in public more often
These hold true for any car, but "exotic" cars attract proportionally more attention, and so you get more vandalism/theft and people parking next to it (door dings!) simply because they're unique and expensive.
3. Performance tires do poorly in inclement weather
Let's face it, unless you live in Los Angeles (and even there, only outside of the rainy season) you'll be driving in inclement weather at times, and the high-performance tires of an "exotic" are typically poor at handling rain and snow. Besides, those tires are expensive to replace, so even in dry weather you're exposing them to road hazards.
4. Low ground clearance and normal streets don't mix
Be ready to hit everything from snow drifts to raised manhole covers, not to mention bouncing the nose off of steep driveways. Average roads are not friendly to cars with low ground clearance.
5. You'll attract a lot of attention
Normal people will think you're a poseur; teenagers (and gearheads) will bother you with stupid questions; policemen will follow you and train their radar guns on you, even if you're the slowest car on the road. If you buy an "exotic" to get attention, boy will you get it if you drive it to the grocery store -- this is why some "exotic" owners buy their flashy card in muted colors, to help minimize this effect.
6. Your own comfort will likely suffer
Unless your "exotic" is really an expensive cruiser (which means it really isn't an "exotic" car, just a luxury one) there has been a trade-off of decreased comfort for increased performance. That exhaust note, taut ride and low seating position are all great on the track or the mountain roads, but on a freeway commute or regular street, you'll get sick of the noise and rough ride very quickly.
7. Not really made for close-quarters maneuvering
"Exotic" cars, with their huge wide wheels (wide turning circle) and mid-engine placement (small rear windows, big blind spots) aren't suited for maneuvering through city streets. With the attention you'll get, more often than not someone in a Hyundai will be sitting in your blind spot trying to get a closer look, and that blind spot is probably huge compared to a normal car.
I think that about sums it up; if you have the money for an "exotic", surely you have the money for a little daily commuter car, right? Save your "exotic" for environments and occasions when you can enjoy it properly, like a road trip to Vegas or a track day at Willow Springs, and pull out the Accord for everything else.
Then again, if your ego can't stand the idea of driving an Accord where you'll be seen in public, then you're probably buying the "exotic" to boost your own poor self-image -- good luck with that, and I look forward to seeing you slowly -- and loudly, vroom vroom! -- navigating the Trader Joe's parking lot in your Lingerfeld Corvette.

Of course exotic cars are usable every day. My only concern are the idiots that key cars, can't back out to save their soul, can't park so they bang your car, open their door and ding your car, the DUI crowd, thieves who want the hood ornament or your stereo (my convertible got slashed after one month in Vegas and they stole my Bose sound system and my license plate plus over 50 CD's), the rear enders (people who speed, slam on their brakes and get you from behind; this happened to me last Fall in a non-convertible), people that run lights and T-Bone other people, and rim thieves (hopefully your rims are locked; if you have hubcaps, you can kiss them goodbye). My best suggestion would be to watch those mirrors constantly, have the insurance maxxed and park away from everybody else even if it means a two mile hike to Wrigley Field.

Risks asside, I think the bigger issue here is the mileage you'd put on it. Ferraris, as an example, require extensive maintenance in what would be considered normal mileage for more mundane vehicles. You can put 30k miles on a Honda with raising an eyebrow...put 30k on a Ferrari in one year and you'll be spending a nice tidy sum on "consumables" at the local Ferrari dealer. That alone makes an exotic as a daily driver a bad idea.

many exotic cars can be very rough to handle on a daily basis. the suspensions can be stiff and even uncomfortable to ride on a daily basis...
this is changing for newer cars which can provide performance and some level of comfort.

What fun is it to have something "exotic" and special if it just sits in a garage or something all the time! You might not be around tomorrow, so it's important to live today! Have fun!

How about just for week-end jaunts? You'll reduce the wear and tear considerably and still get to use your exotic car.

No it's fine for everyday use. Yeah you'll risk scratches, dings, and wrecks but why bother having something if you're not going to use it. Plus, using it on a regular basis is sure to attract attention. =)
