The Old testament was written up until 400BC and detailed the history of the world and Jewish people. It also includes many prophecies of the coming Messiah among other things.

The New testament is the result of the fulfillment of the Old Testament Messiah prophecies. It sets up a new covenant with Jesus as it's focus. It also, foretells what will happen in the future (the coming of the Lord and New Jerusalem.)
