England was almost entirely covered in forest until around the 16th century when huge areas were cut down for timber to build ships, and to make way for agricultural land. There are still a few small forests such as the New Forest on the south coast of England, Exmoor forest and Dartmoor forest in the south west, and forested areas in yorkshire and the lake district in the north.
But yes mostly england is open fields and rolling hills with small wooded areas. There are still many more trees than in northern France and the Low countries for example, where the land is totally flat and treeless.
