Don't worry, this happens all the time. Go to your drivers license place (whatever it is called in your state) and ask for a duplicate one. They will charge you a modest fee. Take the registration with you, it will probably help.

In most states (if not all) you must file a "Lost Title Affidavit" with the DMV. They'll issue a duplicate title. It is illegal to sell a car without a legal title.

I went to the DMV and filled out the paperwork for a lost title.
It only took a few minutes and it cost $10.00.
I'm sure each state will vary on the fee.
Now if you have never had a title on it and the other owner lost the title it will cost you about $100.00 to do the title search and create a new title.
I had to do that with and old motorcycle I bought.

Depending on the state that you reside in would depend on what you do. First step would be to contact your police department to inform them that it is missing. The person that is in possession of the pink slip is the person that owns it. You may have lost it in your home, but it is always better to be safe than sorry. They will then inform you to get into contact with your local DMV or Secretary of State office (again, depending on where you live. Some states DMV office has nothing to do with lost titles). It does cost in most states to obtain a duplicate title to your vehicle.

Go to License Bureau and apply for a duplicate title. When you receive the title in the mail, you can then sell the vehicle legally.
