A fourth-century Church council, the Council of Ephesus, declared it heretical.
It's heretical because it denies the hypostatic union -- the belief that Jesus, though He has two natures (the divine and the human) is one divine person.
To say that Mary is the mother only of His human nature is to "split Him up" in a way that contradicts the hypostatic union.
Curiously, Protestants believe in the hypostatic union but do not believe that Mary was the Mother of God. They try to have it both ways, but they really can't. They're trying to wed their belief in the hypostatic union with their belief that Mary was the mother of Jesus' "human side" only.
Catholic teaching -- that Mary is the mother of the whole person of Jesus, of His divine and human natures -- is much more consistent with the Christian doctrine of the hypostatic union.

Yes absolutely. Mary was not a God. She was a human woman, a virgin, the earthly mother of the Lord Jesus Christ, the Messiah, the Savior.
Mary should not be worshiped no more than any other disciple of Jesus.
Jesus said in John 14:6 I am the way, the truth and the life. No man comes to the Father, but by me.

~*~*~*~ I think Jesus might disagree. ~*~*~*~
People just have a hangup because they think that calling her the mother of the whole Jesus means that by default... they are calling her a deity. But that is not the case. (Read the answer above mine. She was very informative.)
And by the way irishharpist, I can only assume that you're referring to Catholics "worshiping her," which is not true. It's simply an ignorant misconception that has been passed down by parents for generation. But ask any Catholic, and you'll find out the real answer. Who knows better about what a Catholic believes? A Catholic... or someone who's never even been in a Catholic church? Hmm... that's a toughie....
~*~*~ edit ~*~*~
rocky_road: She is not worshiped. Praying to Mary or a saint for intervention (prayer) is not the same as worshiping them. And to dispell another igorant belief that seems abundant... no, we do not "have to go through someone else to get to God." Catholics pray to God, Jesus, and Holy Spirit more than they pray to Mary. And be clear: prayer is simply speaking to someone in Heaven. It is not the same as worship, unless that intention is attached.

Mary was the mother of Jesus. She was special. The Bible tells us that all generations will call her "blessed".
Mary was human...she was a sinner. In her speech to Elizabeth, she mentions that God was her Savior. She was NOT deity.
Luke 1:46-48 (NKJV)
And Mary said:
"My soul magnifies the Lord,
[47] And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior.
[48] For He has regarded the lowly state of His maidservant;
For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed.
The idea or teaching that people are elevated to a "Saintly" position after death is a false one.
All true believers are called "saints". They are just regular people that are sinners that trust in Jesus for their salvation.

Mary was the mother of Jesus which makes her the mother of Christianity, since without her loyalty to God before the birth, someone else would have born our Savior.

Quite true. And why some people worship Mary is beyond me. Even she needed a savior. I'm sure it upsets her today to know that people are worshiping her and not Jesus.
