Probably something to do with the fact we all live together on this planet but when you die you are then on your own

there is no committment for the long haul living together you have no reason to stay or go you just use them for sex and whatever until they are no longer useful or you make em mad and because you are not married why work it out when you can just leave. You end up alone becuase there is not commitment, covenant and willingness to work it out.
Biologically speaking living in packs promote survival becuase many can defend against one. One alone usually gets picked off by a predator.

The expression means that in life you are never quite alone, people being co-dependend and all, but dying is something you have to do alone, there can be people present when you die but crossing over is a "solo activity".
