I've never done it but had tons of freinds and family that had. Typically you clean trash off the side of the road, a county cop usually takes a group of you to the location in a van you get out put on bright orange vests and get to work, and if you're lucky people like me will drive by honk and laugh at you. Other things I know people have done was paint a local community center, my brother did some kind of community service at a hospital because he has a bum knee, so I guess it just depends.

It depends on the needs within the community and/or the restitution that needs to take place. Sometimes they will do volunteer work at the place they stole from (or broke into), if they were nabbed for defacing the community they could be made to clean up their mess, it's supposed to be a way for the person to have time to consider what they did and decide not to do it again.

In the UK, they have to do practically nothing. Most young criminals see it as the soft option it actually is. Usually it is not supervised, and most offenders fail to turn up at all. Those unlucky enough to be taken back to court for failing to do their Community Service get a sentence of - surprise, surprise! - more Community Service. So - Punishment? No! Deterrent? - No! Teaches respect for the Law? No!

When I worked at a public library, we would have community service workers all the time. We would have them pick up trash around the building, clean the computer keyboards, vacuum the building, help set up for events, dust the shelves, etc. At Christmas time, we would ask them to decorate the Christmas Tree and put up decorations.

Community Service can range from picking up trash, cleaning parks, washing police cars to working in a public library or domestic violence safe house. It depends on your community and what they need done at the time.

Unpaid work in the community. If you breach your sentence by not fulfilling the hours you have been sentenced to you could be re-sentenced for the breach and sent to prison.
