there is a special knife like utensile you can get at a cook ware store.

That being said, it's really difficult. You can hurt yourself really badly and needless to say it's a pain in the butt.

But, if you are still into opening them on your own, here's a list of things you need to think about.

1. You have to do this as quickly as possible (without hurting yourself) This is because the oysters become warm as you handle them and this ruins the taste in many cases.

2. You need to have prior knowledge about good and spoiled oysters. If you eat a bad oyster, you can be paralyzed from neck down. This is no joke. It's lethal.

That being said, you're better off getting it done at the fish mart and brining it home.

It's called an oyster knife. Wear a heavy duty glove on left hand. With knife in right hand. Place oyster in left with smaller end facing you. put edge of knife in that little crack closest to you and pop. Some oysters are harder than others. Be care full. I've seen people cut their hands open trying this. Have someone show you. That's the safest way.

They make special knives to do this. You should put the knife between the halves at the largest opening. Turn the knife side-ways and the oyster will pop right open. Hold the oyster in a cloth so that you have a better handle on it and it won't slip.

ith a rag and an oyster knife, or a flat-head screwdriver. grab the oyster in the rag to protect your hand and dig into the apex where the joint of the shell is and dig in to open. Then slide underneath the oyster to cut the muscle holding it in the shell and rinse off to dislodge any little shell pieces.... a cracker...touch of Tabasco and la de da...bon appetite!

Pry the knife in near where the shell haves hinge and twist it. There's a bit of a feel you have to learn over time to be proficient, but I'm a native Marylander so it's second nature-- just like opening crabs.

Knock politely on the shell and say "Dominos Pizza" and when the oyster opens the shell you say "Hey thanks for the two points!"

Use a knife, and you need to carefully slide it in the end opposite to the 'hinge'. Then you need to twist the knife to open it up. You need to be very careful though.
