probably because you don't have a cdrw or dvdrw.... look at the front of your dvd drive if it says rw/r then you need to check your settings otherwise you need to invest in a rewriter :)

Reinstalling XP most likely won't work. Are you sure you have a cd burner? In my pc, right click on the driver letter and click on properties, then go to hardware and look for the cd/dvd driver. Does it way CD-RW? If not, you don't have a cd burner.
Although it's very uncommon nowadays having a cd/dvd combo which does not burn cds, they exist, so you may need a cd burner.
If it doesn't say it is a CD-RW but you are sure you have a CD burner, then try reinstalling the cd drivers and search for any update in the manufacturer's web site.

If you've not had your PC very long... are you sure it's actually a burner as well as a reader? (Although I'm sure you've thought of that - apologies!). XP can be a bit of a pain in the bum - maybe try another version of the Windows OS and see if that helps? Do you know anyone who has an external burner you could borrow and plug in for an afternoon to see if it's the software or your burner itself?

No, thats a bit drastic, try the XP Troubleshooter. It may be the drivers are wrong or there's a codec missing. I can't remember how to access it so try the Control Panel and have a rummage in there.
Plus Microsoft have a help forum, go to the site and search.

In my opinion reinstalling Xp wont help.
The best thing to do is reinstall the drivers of your CD/DVD drive.
(you should be able to get them from the website of the manufacturer of the CD/DVD drive)

You could try that but I don't think it would help...
Trouble is probably in CD-ROM so if you can take it to servise or something like that. It is HW problem for sure...

It could be that the media you're trying to burn is copy-protected...
