I have been invited to go shooting out on long island and I live in a neighboring state. I will have to pass through NYC, with my assult rifle, to get to my destination. does anyone know if this is legal?

Gun regulations are state laws. If you know your New York gun laws, and you don't leave the state of New York, you should be alright. Just MAKE SURE YOU KNOW THE LAW before you do anything. As you probably well know, rifles like this are pretty much legal as long as they are not FULLY AUTOMATIC.

Try calling the shooting range in Long Island as to restrictions from a neighboring states.

Just what we need, more guns in NY.

Just be careful. Had a close friend get killed at a shooting range in May.

no it is not but if you take you gun apart put it in the trunk and have all your paperwork, you'll be ok... no ammo.. buy it on long island.
