I was told by my doctor that nail biting may be a sign of a vitamin or iron deficiency. Make sure he or she is getting everything they need in their diet, that may eliminate the problem. She also said it could be the child's nerves. Maybe a significant change in their life. The last thing she said was, or just a habit. I used the thumb sucking stuff on my son and after about 3 times of him tasting it, he was broke of the habit.

the same germs are under your finger nails as in the toilet! show your child the toilet and explain how we always wash our hands because of the germs and then say how bad it is to put those germs in your mouth. the down side is this may cause a hand washing obsession but it's better than nail biting! (i work with children and this approach often cures the most stubborn nail biters)

I've tried for years to get my daughter to stop. You can try the bitter polish that is supposed to help them stop. We just found out recently that our daughter bites her nails b/c she has a mild form of obsessive compulsive disorder. If you can't get them to stop, then it may be something a little deeper, even at a young age.

just stay on them about how bad it looks for them to be chewing their fingernails and the germs that are under there fingernails.. you can also buy some polish to put on their nails and that might help break them...every time you see them do it slap their hands and tell them again and again until they break the habit.. give them candy to suck on..

it takes a while, you just have to keep telling them it is nasty. and that it will hurt their belly.
our body does not have the enzymes to break down fingernails and hair if eaten. it really is bad for the stomach lining to eat your nails.

all you can do is tell them not to and BE PATIENT...b/c kids don't listen too well sometimes. but biting nails is a tough one to break. it's fine though that they do that. it's normal is what i mean. just give it time. and love them reguardless. let them know you're there for them.

Buy the bitter Nail Biter polish that is awful when you stick in your mouth. It worked on me when I was little.

tell him, "if you keep biting your finger nails you are going to die because they are poisonous." or, "since your biting your finger nails you won't need to eat (what ever the meal, what ever the food for that meal).
