It seems that unless people can see a "broken arm", a "bleeding wound", a "cancer diagnosis", "asthma" , "arthiritis" (and many more lables out there) a mental condition is less inmportant as the above. There are so many people that do not understand that it is real...it is a struggle everyday to just get to the end of the day. You are ridiculed for you behavior as irresponsible or inconsiderate. You get the picture. IT IS AS REAL AS CANCER OR AIDS OR ANY OTHER UNCUREABLE ILLNESS!!

Part of the problem is that they can't "see" it, i.e., there's no concrete, outward, whack-you-over-the-head obvious origins for your problem....they think you're faking it or making excuses. Unless you have a condition that's extreme and, as they say, "certifiable", they think you can just "get over it". But see, I know--unlike many other uneducated, judgmental, or just plain stupid people--that most mental illnesses in fact have their origins somewhere in the brain, and therefore there is an actual physical and/or chemical connection. Like a famous line from an argument I've had about just these issues, "Just because they can't see it doesn't mean it doesn't exist!" I know about that problem...cognitive issues are treated much the same by many people...like they think you can just "get over it" or that it's "intentional"...which leads to that belief that you're just irresponsible or inconsiderate.

The other part of the problem is simply a long history of misunderstanding that continues. The only solution to that is mass education, or for an individual, educating those you know.

I live in America, and I've never met anyone who doesn't believe that mental illness is not real, or is any less serious than physical illness.

Where do you live? If I can speak frankly, that could be part of the problem.

Ignorance is the problem. Educated people usually understand what you are expressing.
