Bill Gates is just retiring from the role of a software developer and an active engineer. He will continue to remain the chairman of Microsoft

He's not leaving as such. He's leaving the day to day running of the company to someone else because he wants to spend more time on his philanthropy ( i.e. giving his money to help AIDS research and so on). I think he said he would take two years away but I may be wrong.
