were is correct. It's not singular or plural but fact (I was here yesterday) versus contrary to fact (if I were). "if I were" is fairly formal language, that is why many responders don't actually know how to use it correctly. As another person said, your statement is wordy, but grammatically perfect.

Sorry, that's incorrect! The sentence should read, "If the reason for me to come here was to earn a lot of money, I wouldn't be here.

Yes your answer is no doubt correct. We always use 'were' when the form of the sentence is imaginary. Like in this case, 'If were' is used, this means that its not happening its just imaginary & that's all. For instance- If he were here, we might have done our homework.

After the if were is used, it is correct, but how many people would say it that way? Is there another way to say it that people could understand?
