My sister is having swelling and pain on the back side of her neck, but only on one side of it (the left, I think). It's not a sprain, or anything, although it's in the same area that you normally experience muscle-related neck pain - it seems to be some sort of infection, because the worse it hurts, the more ill she has been feeling: really tired, and allergy/cold symptoms. And at one point when the swelling got bad, the tonsil on that same side of her neck also swelled (but not the other one). I'm very worried about her, and wondered if anyone had any good idea as to what these symptoms could be? I can't find anything specific in an online search. TIA!

It's more than likely an inflamed lymph gland, but it's a good idea to have it check out. Could be a symptom of Mono....

Gee. Lets see. Your sister has swelling in her neck, is in pain, she becomes ill, tired and gets flu like symptoms. So, lets turn to Yahoo Answers for the answer to this serious medical problem instead of taking her to a DOCTOR or an EMERGENCY ROOM!

Where is your common sense?

The swelling in her neck is likely caused by lymph nodes. They become swollen when the body is trying to fight off infection. She probably needs an antibiotic. See a doctor.

Swollen lymph nodes. She should see a doc to see if she needs antibiotics, especially if she has any fever. Infection can hang out in nodes for months if untreated and make you feel really run down... could even be mono... she needs to be seen.

I would take her to a doctor ASAP...You don't want to mess around with infections especially if it's in the neck. You don't want to end up with meningitis or encephalitis which are potentially deadly
