He earned this nickname during the war of 1812. The nickname was earned because, as a general during this war, he earned the reputation of strict discipline during his march to Natchez, Mississippi where he had been ordered to take his men, but once he got there was told they were not needed and to disband. He refused and marched them back to Tennessee. The men started saying he was tough as an old hickory tree, therefore his nickname began.

Jackson had the reputation of being quite brave in battle and wouldn't duck and run for cover. So he stood like a hickory, a very "tough" type of tree- lon-lived, hard wood and doesn't bend easily.
