Honestly, I used to get them all the time. Here is what you do.....do NOT eat or drink at least two hours before going to bed (this includes anytype of medicine). This alone should do the job. Now, if for some reason you still have one, once you awake from it...do NOT return to sleep in the same position. Turn your body over into another position and your head facing another direction....trust me, this works. I used to fall asleep into the same nightmare before I learned this trick. I hate nightmares...they are the worse. The worst ones are knowing you are in a nightmare and screaming for someone to wake you up.....those are the ones I don't understand...I know I am dreaming and I am trying to get someone to wake me up. Best of luck to you!!!!

I always had awful nightmares from time to time and I know that eating too much before going to bed or too hot a temperature in my room while sleeping often cause them.
But a few month ago I started having nightmares every night without knowing why. It suddenly stopped just after I moved the furniture in my bedroom.
From my bed's previous place I couldn't see the door and I have been told that it could make you anxious when sleeping because you can't see people coming until they actually enter the room. I don't know if it is true, but the thing is I sleep more quietly now.
I hope it helps, I know how stressful this can be.

I have been an insomniac all my life. When we were little my mother took pictures of my 2 brothers while they were sleeping. She never could get one of me. Still today I might get 3 hours sleep a night if I'm lucky. I've tried taking all kinds of MEDS. but i haven't found any thing that helps. As far as the nightmares I don't have them all the time. I do have them a lot. I'm getting up in age and I still haven't found any cure for this. I've tried home remedies. I've tried herbs. I've even tried praying. Praying helps some but not very often. I'm truly sorry that this doesn't answer your question. I just want you to know that there is other people out there with the same problem. Try to remember me if you find something that helps.

If you have a bad dream and wake up out of it turn your pillow over. This wakes you up enough to "get rid" of the dream but not enough that you shouldn't be able to go back to sleep.

A ritual before bed will help you sleep and lets your body know it is time to sleep and wind down. Warm milk before bed might help with a warm bath. Controlled breathing and meditation also help you go to sleep and relax. (Meditation doesn't mean you have to think pleasant thought just keep clearing your mind of any thoughts). Bright lights at night wake your body up tricking it into thinking it is morning and it should be awake. So, keep it dark. Blue lights wake you up, red lights make you sleepy. Use your bed for sleep and not work that will help your body know bed means sleep. Keep it quite.

There is a sleeping "disorder" that is when people have terrible nightmares because they are in a certain stage of sleep in which the body isn't ready for the dream. They usually occur 15 minutes to 1 hour into your sleep. This is called night terrors. When you have one you sweat and feel like your dream was really real. You would have to talk to a sleep doctor is this is what you have.

Since you have been awake so long it will be hard to go to sleep because your body is probably running off of adrenaline. In time, as you allow yourself to relax you will fall asleep or you will stay up so long your body will make you fall asleep. Although, it sounds like you really want medicine you may be able to get relief without it.

There are plenty of suggestions for insomnia on the web. Try doing a search. Here is a link to a website that might help:

When I was about 9 years old my older sister taught me this and it has never failed me. Think of your worst nightmare RIGHT BEFORE you go to sleep, or scary things in general and it somehow seems to trick your mind into NOT dreaming about these things. ALSO, the answerer before is right as well; say your prayers and ask the LORD to give you pleasant dreams. Works for me. Lastly, begin to keep a dream journal that you write in right before bed and right after you wake up. You will begin to take control of your sleep. Be sure your bed is clean and comfortable. Consider scenting your room with candles and possible incense an hour or two before bed. A candle scent called "ambience" and an incense called "Nag Champa" keeps my home serene. Prepare yourself also with a warm candlelit bath and soft music (lullabies are not called lull-a-by's for nothing) but be sure to blow everything out before sleep. Try all this and you will surely begin getting your 8 hours. I promise.

Keep south pole of a powerful round magnet in such a way that south pole will touch the neck.
Ask family members to remove magnet after you sleep.
Before you sleep make a JAPA of any God you believe.
Do not FEAR of anything - heard or seen.

If it's availiable, ask your doctor to prescribe you marinol or some other THC containing prescription drug. I have suffered from nightmares since childhood, and that's the only thing that would put me out.
